Tommy '86 - Transhumanism [FREE Download]

If you’re itching for more synthwave since my Perturbator post, then this post is the one you’ve been waiting for! Transhumanism may not be quite as dark as the Perturbator album, but it’s packed with just as much aggressive, nostalgic synthy goodness! This album is also being released by Blood Music, the same label that put out The Uncanny Valley so you know you’re in for the same type of ride. Tommy ’86 may be a reference to his birth year, but it’s more likely a reference to the era that influenced his music the most. Transhumanism is a concept album that is set in the machine-dominated dystopian town Citymulation, in the year 2332. There we find the The L.V.T.H.N. Project which is a group intent on creating AI that emulates the human brain, an attempt that inevitably goes awry as the AI evolves beyond its creators. According to the label this is Tommy 86’s first darksynth album, a departure from his “retrosynth” releases from the past. This album also features label-mates and fellow Frenchmen Dan Terminus and the aforementioned Perturbator. Download it for free below and buy the physical copy from Blood Music if you like what you hear!

Godchilla - Slurf Demo [FREE Download]

Now here’s an interesting mix. Psychedelic surf meets sludge music with this Icelandic band named Godchilla. That's a pretty killer fucking name that also shows that the band has a sense of humor, which is needed when you’re combining these disparate genres. Metal writer Kim Kelly describes the band with the following: “If Dick Dale up and defected to Iceland and started a band with a bunch of dudes who worship Buzzoven and Crowbar, Godchilla would be the mind-melting result.” It’s hard to come up with a better, more succinct description so I’ll just leave it as that. In 2013 they released two tracks under the aptly named demo Slurf which is available for free download via their Bandcamp page. Their first full-length COSMATOS also includes the two tracks, and is available for $7.00 or more. Have an open mind and give it a listen; you might like what you hear.

Free Food on Thanksgiving from Furious Spoon in Chicago/ Big Ed's BBQ in Waukegan

Furious Spoon is one of the many Ramen shops that opened up in Chicago.  The original location first opened up in the Wicker Park neighborhood and offered free bowls of ramen on their opening day.  Since then they have opened up another location in nearby hip neighborhood Logan Square, another in downtown inside the Revival Food Hall, and another upcoming location in the Pilsen area.  Now that Thanksgiving has come along, Furious Spoon is once again giving out free food at their original location in Wicker Park.

The free bowls of ramen is intended for those who "need it most" and will be given out from 11am until 4pm, or until they run out.  No proof of any kind is needed, just come and get a bowl if you need one.  We don't normally do posts like these but this is pretty awesome and deserves more press.  Furious is one of the few shops that makes their ramen noodles in-house and also one of the few that serves the Tsukemen style dipping noodles. So please share this news to those who would benefit the most from it.

If you're closer to the Northern burbs in Illinois Big Ed's BBQ in Waukegan will also be giving out free food tomorrow from noon to 3pm in their 75 seat restaurant.  Everyone is welcome and “It’s going to be a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings including green beans, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and also sweet potatoes and soda,...”

Noname - Telefone [Free Download]

Sorry for the hiatus, let’s not waste anymore time and get right to it - Noname (formerly Noname Gypsy) hails from the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago. Before this debut mixtape she was notably featured on a track from Chance the Rapper’s album Acid Raps, which is fitting since she shares a certain spirit in style with her fellow Chicago native. Her sing-songy raps and diverse flows has the stream of consciousness of slam poetry and a ‘matter-of fact’ delivery - a stark contrast to the usual Hip Hop braggadocio. The sleepy, sparkly beats on Telefone are full of twinkling keys, cascading xylophones and harmonizing hums which helps Noname’s lyrics nimbly float around the snapping snares and bouncing bass. There’s a playfulness in her delivery which belies the skill in her wordweaving, leaving an album full of joy and subtle sadness steeped in nostalgia and struggle.  This is an amazing debut.

X-Men VS Invizibl Skratch Piklz 20th Anniversary [Video]

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the classic, legendary battle that took place between the X-Men and the Invizibl Skratch Piklz at the 1996 ITF World Finals.  This is arguably the greatest DJ battle ever recorded, and there are DJs today 20 years later that still cannot come close to the level of skill shown in this battle!  This is the ultimate culmination of the East VS West Coast styles of turntablism and deserves to be seen by every fan of the genre at least once.  This was not a judged competition, but a showcase put together by the world famous Rocksteady Crew, who both the X-Men (now the Xecutioners) and the Invizibl Skratch Piklz were members of.  This video features ISP's famous Klamz Uv Deth group routine and one of the best sets from the late, great Grandmaster Roc Raida.  Watch the video above and read an article written for the anniversary by DJ Rob Swift of the Xecutioners. #RIPROCRAIDA

Logic - Bobby Tarantino [FREE Stream]

TURN UP TURN UP TURN UP TURN UP! Logic is a young MC from Maryland who broke out with some quality mixtapes in 2009.  He ended up signing a deal with Def Jam Recordings in 2013, scoring legendary Chicago producer No I.D. as the executive producer of his major label debut.  After releasing a couple of songs featuring Childish Gambino and Big Sean, Logic announced that no featured artists would appear on his album, opting instead to focus on himself for his debut.  He released "Under Pressure" in October of 2014 to critical acclaim and strong album sales, quickly following it up just over a year later with "The Incredible True Story" a concept album about a sci-fi earth 100 years in the future.

His revivalist, backpacker lyricism mixed with new school stylings has him often mentioned along the same lines as other young like-minded MCs such as Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole.  So his latest mixtape comes as somewhat a surprise and not just because it was released today with no promotion or warning.  Bobby Tarantino has the self-proclaimed Young Sinatra melding more trap influences with his acrobatic flow, with beats that could be equally comfortable backing Future, Drake and Wacka Flocka as it would Logic and his previously mentioned peers.  Being as it's Turn up season, Logic explained on Apple's Beats 1 Radio that; “I’ve never done music like this. And it’s been in me. I’ve always wanted to turn up and now it’s that time.” The combination works surprisingly well with the 11 tracks, featuring the previously-released singles “Flexicution” and “Wrist" which features Good Music's Pusha T.  It's an interesting marriage of styles and some fans are even calling it Logic's best release yet.  You can stream it below or on Spotify, Google Play and other streaming services:

Perturbator - The Uncanny Valley [FREE Download]

Sorry for the semi-hiatus, but we're back in full force ready with a slew of posts!

Synthwave, darkwave, cyberdance, retroelectro; or whatever made up name-mash you choose to call it has been steadily gaining ground since its resurgence in the early part of this decade. The new/old genre that relies heavily on synthesizers and drips with 80s nostalgia was popularized mostly by artists College and Kavinsky and the soundtrack for the 2011 Ryan Gosling movie DRIVE. Now the genre has the potential to crack the lower end of the mainstream, and has also inexplicably rose in popularity in the metal world as well. Maybe it’s the connection to old horror movie soundtracks, the use of synths by early metal/prog artists such as Black Sabbath, Tangerine Dream and Queensryche (and 'newer' band Ulver who traded folk-influenced black metal for more symphonic, electronic experimental music) or maybe deep down inside sometimes metalheads just want to dance too! Either way the genre presents a new kind of heavy for metal fans to appreciate, and more and more artists are coming out as it rises in prominence.

One such artist that's making noise in both the synthwave and metal world is Perturbator, a project started by French musician James Kent former guitarist for defunct death metal band I The Omniscient. Concentrating on cyberpunk visuals and dark, anime-influenced themes, his style of synthwave has garnered him many positive reviews including some from metal site MetalSucks and horror movie website Bloody Disgusting. His music was featured in the 2012 game Hotline Miami and its 2015 sequel Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, and he was even chosen to play at the underground kvlt black metal festival Nidrosian Black Mass!

His latest release The Uncanny Valley is his most aggressive yet, and is being put out by experimental metal label Blood Music. I have not been able to stop listening to this album since it came out, and I would be remiss if I didn’t share it with the Idol Threat readers! So go to the link below to download the album that got Idol Threat out of hiatus (and donate a few bucks if you can) and check out his other releases and maybe buy the album on CD, LP or TRIPLE LP while you’re at it!

Love Sex Machine - Asexual Anger [FREE Download]

With a name like Love Sex Machine you would be forgiven to think this band would be some sort of funk or rock group, but all you would need to do is take a peek at the song titles from their 2012 album ("Anal on deceased virgin" and "Killed with a monster cock" for example) to know that their music is not for the faint of heart.  Despite their Cannibal Corpse-sounding song titles, this French band actually deals in the doomier/sludgier end of the heavy metal spectrum and does so masterfully.  It's been 4 years since their self-titled debut and their latest "Asexual Anger" could not have come soon enough.  Once again they're offering their album for free download or donation, but this time around they've also added a physical CD, LP or shirt option for purchase as well.  The album artwork was done by Fortifem and it looks great, so you may want to pick up a shirt and/or the LP sleeve to fully showcase it.  You can get all that at the link below.

MF DOOM/SeanH Sadevillain EP [Free Download]

DOOM! King Geedorah! Metal Fingers! Viktor Vaughn! The Villain! Mr. Metal Face himself!  The rapper formerly known as Zev Love X from KMD has had many aliases in his career, all mostly associated with the ever-present metal gladiator mask that adorns his face. The mask does more than help create a character, it gives him a menacing look befitting of a diabolical villain!  Truly the evil mastermind who has collaborated with the blunted god Madlib in Madvillain, and Ghostface Killah arguably the toughest of the Wu-Tang Clan would have nothing but the hardest-hitting, roughest ruffneck, boom-bap collabos coming up!  So of course who better to team up with DOOM than...Sade?

Young 18 year old UK producer SeanH (aka Seanh2k11) has produced a mashup of classic MF Doom acapellas with beats made from the songs of the ever-sexy and smooth Sade.  Crazy right?  No way this would work?  Apparently not so much because Dumille's vocals pair pretty well with the ethereal R&B of the legendary songstress, and this Sadevillain EP is actually pretty dope.  It helps that MF Doom has actually sampled Sade in the past with his track Doomsday.  Download it below to tide you over until Doom Starks finally drops!

The Private Eye by Brian K. Vaughan [FREE]

Brian K. Vaughan is an amazing and highly acclaimed writer. He has created and/or written many comic books including Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Marvel’s Runaways, Pride of Baghdad, and the highly popular Saga. Vaughan was also a writer, executive story editor and producer for seasons 3 to 5 on the ABC TV series Lost. Damon Lindelof the co-creator and executive producer of Lost was a huge fan of Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man. In addition to all that Brian has won a whopping 10 Eisner Awards and was nominated for many others. Needless to say any project he is involved with deserves some attention, let alone one that is being offered for free.

The Private Eye is a sci-fi detective series written by Vaughan, drawn by Marcos Martín and takes place in the year 2076. It is set in a post-internet world where concerns over privacy and a major event have led to every citizen having a secret identity. In this world the press is also the police, and the story follows Pi who is a detective/unlicensed journalist, aka a "paparazzo." The series lasted 10 issues and was self-published by its creators digitally through their website, Panel Syndicate, in DRM-free formats.  In 2015 it won an Eisner Award for Best Digital/Webcomic and the Harvey Award for Best Online Comics Work. The comic has a clever premise and is highly addictive, and I can see it being easily adapted to television. They are up for digital download with a suggested donation so try and drop a few bucks if you can, it is insane that a comic book this good is being offered for free.

Idol Threat's Top 20 Albums of 2015

It's only a few days later than when last year's list was posted, but we made it just under the wire! This past year's Top 20 list took awhile to put together so we won't add on needlessly with a long intro. So without further ado, here is Idol Threat's Top 20 Albums of 2015 in no particular order (see the full list by clicking on "the jump")

Beauty Pill – Beauty Pill Describes Things As They Are
I want more life, fucker.”  That quote from Bladerunner is the first lyric for the “Beauty Pill Describes Things As They Are” album.  It’s a pretty appropriate movie quote for an album that’s so electronically organic. That phrase seems even more apropos when you realize that years ago the mastermind behind Beauty Pill Chad Clark was diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy and had to undergo emergency open heart surgery to save his life.  The surgery is one of the main reasons it took so long to record this new album, which is the band’s first release since 2004.  Their artsy, electronically-inflected indie rock was a strange fit on the legendary Washington, D.C.-based hardcore label Dischord, so they opted for a more fitting home for this release with Butterscotch Records.  This album is so full of life, colors, and joy that it transforms the opening phrase into a declaration of exuberance as opposed to rage.  Beauty Pill Describes… seems so celebratory that it manages to make words like fuck, junkie and asshole sound almost innocent.  With its thick yet sleek production, inventive rhythms and nuances this album is definitely more appreciated within headphones.  “Describes Things As They Are” is lush, fresh, extremely listenable and engrossing.

Endon – MAMA
MAMA was originally released last year in Japan on CD through renowned Japanese label Daymare Recordings. This album was produced by Atsuo the drummer of the famed Japanese band Boris. It also garnered so much attention that it received a worldwide release via Hydra Head in 2015, which is considerable since they technically closed their doors as a label in 2012. There seems to be a lot of star power that believes in Endon and for good reason. The Japanese quartet's sound is intense. So much so that it often defies categorization. Endon are about noise. There's some black metal there, and some grindcore and a dash of hardcore too but they're mostly about noise. Despite this fact you would be hard pressed to call their music noise metal. They don't sound like Today Is The Day, Unsane or Ken Mode, so calling them noise metal would be more of an understatement to the term noise. There are lots of bands that sound like the sum of their influences, but it is rare for one to sound like all of them playing at the same time. Guitar riffs are enveloped or beaten into submission by distortion as harsh electronics whirr and stutter. Often times the drummer sounds like he’s playing blast beats in a typhoon as schizophrenic screams and tongues spoken with both anger and anguish terrorize the tracks. That isn't to say that this album was put together haphazardly, there's an obvious method behind the madness. There is structure underneath all the chaos. Yet there is also more madness behind the madness as well. This is very challenging anti-music so proceed with caution.

Rapper Big Pooh & Nottz - Home Sweet Home
Little Brother came onto the scene at an opportune time.  The North Carolina trio was credited for bringing positive throwback Hip Hop back to the forefront at a time when it was sorely lacking.  Even their name itself was an ode to the 'big brothers' of Hip Hop they admired; A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, De La Soul etc. With the group's disbandment it was no question that the members would thrive on their own with 9th Wonder producing for Mary J. Blige, Jay Z and Destiny's Child and Phonte creating his own Grammy nominated duo The Foreign Exchange.  With the meteoric rise of the two it would be easy to assume that the lesser noticed Rapper Big Pooh would be left by the wayside.  Pooh had done quite the opposite actually dropping a multitude of mixtapes and albums while proving himself to be a strong solo artist.  "Home Sweet Home" touches on more personal subject matter, making it highly relatable.  Memory lane is definitely the major theme that is driven over on this album as songs about home, high school and nostalgia dominate the release. In the opening verse to 'Welcome Home' Pooh raps “all respect due to the elders in the room” before rapping about coming home to family - when's the last time you heard a Hip Hop artist give respect to their elders?  That respect is reflected in Rapper's music as well as his life and is quite refreshing to hear. But Big Pooh’s wise and insightful lines would be nothing without the hard-hitting production from Nottz, who’s break-heavy beats pushes this album from a solid one to one of our top albums of the year.

Insect Warfare Reunite to play Obscene Extreme 2016 July 13-17

The other day Dobber Beverly, the drummer for War Master and the last drummer to play for legendary Texas grindcore act Insect Warfare posted the above picture of said band.  Rahi, Dobber and Beau's current bands just happened to be sharing practice space and posted the pic on Facebook which instantly spurred comments and questions on whether or not they were getting back together.  Apparently the rumors are true because it was just announced that the trio will reunite to play Obscene Extreme Fest an open air metal and hardcore festival that takes place in the Czech Republic!  Hopefully this also means more shows planned for the future and maybe even some new music.  With this and the At the Drive In announcement this is turning out to be an incredible week!  Here is what festival founder Miroslav "Curby" Urbanec had to say about the fortuitous reunion:

"Thousands of grinders all over the world have been waiting for this moment for many years and now it is here! An exclusive show at Obscene Extreme fest and a comeback we have been impatiently waiting for!!!

INSECT WARFARE will crush the Trutnov Battlefield with a power of grind hurricane!!! Precise riffs, intense cyclone. We are expecting nothing less!!! This band has ruled the world with their ingenious album “World Extermination” that brought an awesome portion of totally devastating music!!!

Uargh! You just cannot miss that!!! Our enthusiasm knows no limits!!! Where is July?"

At the Drive In announce 2016 World Tour and New Music

Seminal post hardcore group AT THE DRIVE IN have announced that they are reuniting for a world tour and to work on a new album!  This would be their first new album since 2000's classic "Relationship of Command."  At the Drive In formed in 1993 in El Paso, Texas and rose to prominence over the years for their energetic live shows and critically acclaimed albums.  They became one of the most influential post hardcore groups of the late 90s and early 2000s and their last release is considered by many to be a landmark album.  The band broke up in early 2001 and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López formed The Mars Volta while Jim Ward, Paul Hinojos, and Tony Hajjar formed Sparta.  They first reunited in 2012 and played a string of festival shows including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Splendour in the Grass, Fuji Rock, Reading and the Leeds Festival.  You can check out a teaser for their new music below and see the dates for their 2016 World Tour after the jump.
