Adult Swim Singles Presents 19 weeks of Free Music featuring: THOU

Adult Swim is a cable network that plays unorthodox comedy and adult animation. Their connection with the weird has earned their shows cult followings and a place at the cool kids table. This has often manifested as collaborations with independent music. Adult Swim's latest collaboration has them working with 19 different artists in 19 weeks, releasing a free track in conjunction with a shirt designed for that specific track (not free of course.)

The eight week had the show team up with the mighty THOU to release a track titled "Eyehatethou," an obvious nod to Eyehategod fellow New Orleans residents and sludge metal legends.  Thou stays true to form in this single by releasing a heavy as fuck track of body-dragging riffage.  You can stream or download the track below as well as find links to the other weeks' singles (the Thou track is from the 8th week) and links to purchase the shirts.

DJ QBert Presents: HARD BOILED SCRAMBLED EGG Break Mix Part 1 & 2 [FREE]

DJ QBert - the man, the myth, the legend - should require no introduction.  The pioneer of scratch released two albums last year, one of which made it to our Top Albums of the Year list.  It seems he isn't slowing down as he has already released 3 mixes this year.  Mass Appeal magazine premiered the first two of an apparent four part mix series titled HARD BOILED SCRAMBLED EGG. The first is billed as “an odyssey of future bass music,” with Q combining old school funk, soul and rock breaks for a fast-paced mix. The second mix showcases even more funk influences and amps up the energy taking the listeners on a journey that’s “a fast break from the bass.” It should go without saying that these mixes are essential listening, especially since you can download them for FREE! (click on the down arrow underneath the stream in each link.)  You should hurry too because with the recent troubles that Soundcloud has been having artists' tracks and mixes are being taken down left and right with no warning. ~GodzIL

Prefuse 73 - Themes for a 2005 SAAB (9/3 Wagon): A Commuter’s Lament [FREE Mix via FACT Magazine]

Guillermo Scott Herren is a Miami-born/Atlanta-raised producer that has released music under a ton of different names and groups throughout the years including Delarosa & Asora, Risill, Savath & Savalas,Diamond Watch Wrists and Piano Overlord. Despite all these projects he is probably most well-known for the alternative Hip Hop beats he makes as Prefuse 73, a project which was a mainstay for famed British electronic label Warp Records. After years of albums on Warp (and a brief stint with his own label Yellow Year Records) he now has plans to release 2 EPs and an album entitled Rivington Não Rio through NY label Temporary Records Limited this year.

In addition to these records he has teamed up with UK music magazine FACT to release a mix titled "Themes for a 2005 SAAB (9/3 Wagon): A Commuter’s Lament" which features three unheard new Prefuse tracks (two of which will feature on a new EP due in July, Every Color of Darkness) as well as music by Obey City, Nils Frahm, De La Soul, Flying Lotus and more. You can stream and download the mix below through the Soundcloud link, and a full tracklist can be found after the jump.

Grant Morrison Announced as new Editor-in-Chief of Heavy Metal Magazine

It has just been announced that legendary comic book writer Grant Morrison has been named the new Editor in Chief of Heavy Metal Magazine. Heavy Metal was created in 1977 as the U.S. version of the French adult comics magazine Metal Hurlant. It quickly gained it's own identity and grew into a highly popular adult magazine specializing in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror comics. It published works from many legends from inside and out of the comic field including Moebius, H.R. Giger, Bernie Wrightson, Richard Corben, Howard Chaykin, and Walter Simonson.

It also featured short prose fiction and interviews with alternative filmmakers like Federico Fellini and Roger Corman. The magazine even dove into film-making themselves when they released their eponymous animated cult-classic in 1981.  For awhile, the magazine was owned and published by Kevin Eastman the co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, until he sold the magazine to digital and music veteran David Boxenbaum and film producer Jeff Krelitz in January 2014.

Although comics have long been a part of "Heavy Metal" magazine, the company had never actually published standalone comic books themselves. However, that changed last year when former Image Comics title "Hoax Hunters" became the first series released by the publishing company, so it's fitting that they've recruited Grant Morrison as their new Editor in Chief.

Boxenbaum & Krelitz are hoping that the Scottish counterculture icon can breath new "punk energy" into the magazine, and it's hard to argue that the creator of The Invisibles, Filth, and the writer who revitalized Animal Man, X-Men and JLA doesn't have the track record to do so. Be on the lookout for Grant's first issue early next year (pictured above) and stay tuned to Idol Threat for further updates. - GodzIL
