Lemmy Kilmister, Motörhead frontman dead at 70

Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister, legendary singer/bassist for Motörhead and former Hawkwind bassist has passed away from cancer.  Lemmy was a Heavy Metal icon and one of the last, true remaining rock stars and this is a tremendous loss for Rock and Roll.

Former Motörhead drummer Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor died aged 61 in November. “Fast” Eddie Clarke, who becomes the last surviving member of the band’s most famous lineup, wrote on Facebook:

I have just been told that Lemmy has passed away in LA. Like Phil, he was like a brother to me. I am devastated. We did so much together, the three of us.  The world seems a really empty place right now. I am having trouble finding the words … He will live on in our hearts. RIP Lemmy!”

Motörhead drummer Mikkey Dee has also confirmed in an interview that the band is obviously no longer going on without Lemmy;

“Motorhead is over, of course. Lemmy was Motorhead,” Dee says. “We won’t be doing any more tours or anything. And there won’t be any more records. But the brand survives, and Lemmy lives on in the hearts of everyone.”

Lemmy was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, on Christmas Eve in 1945. In the early 1960s he was a roadie for Jimi Hendrix. He played in several rock bands, including the Rockin’ Vickers, Sam Gopal and most infamously in Hawkwind, before forming Motörhead (originally named Bastard) which was taken from the final song he had written for the band. He was reportedly fired from Hawkwind for “doing the wrong drugs."

Lemmy has publicly struggled with illness in recent years. He underwent surgery to have an implantable defibrillator placed in his chest in 2013, and has cancelled shows due to exhaustion and a haematoma; a solid swelling of clotted blood within tissue.  Motörhead had been scheduled to tour the UK and France in early 2016.

There will never be another metal god like Lemmy.  No one will ever have the same style, the same gravely voice or the same blitzkrieg bass playing as the mighty Lemmy Kilmister.  He will be sorely missed.  Here's what the official Motörhead Facebook page posted:

"There is no easy way to say this... our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made its way down the street, with his family.

We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren't words.

We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please... play Motrhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy's music LOUD. Have a drink or few.

Share stories.

Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself.

Star Wars: Tales from the Far, Far Away [Free Comic]

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens has finally arrived and Star Wars fever is EVERYWHERE! Luckily for us that leads to more Star Wars related merch, and even some new fan-written Star Wars comics! Michael Moreci writer co-creator of Hoax Hunters, Roche Limit and Burning Fields and ReincarNATE and Tim Daniel writer, co-creator of Burning Fields, Curse, Enormous, Skinned and Spiritus brings us two new (unofficial) stories from the Star Wars universe!  Tim Daniel's story, featuring art from Kendall Goode, takes place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and focuses on Obi-Wan Kenobi’s life on Tatooine, while Moreci's and artist Morgan Luthi's story “The Hunter’s Bounty tells the tale of how Boba Fett and Bossk fought over the bounty that was placed upon Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon following the Rebel’s victory at Yavin.  Here's what Michael Moreci had to say about the comic:

"If you know me, you probably know I love Star Wars more than just about anything. There’s nothing on the genre fiction spectrum—no book, comic series, or movie—that holds a more important place in my heart. And it goes without saying that I’m not alone in feeling this way, not even close.

Along with Tim Daniel, we partnered with a whole lot of talented comics creators who, like us, share a deep love for Star Wars and, in some ways, feel we owe a debt of gratitude for everything this series has done for us, personally and creatively.

With the new movie coming, the Force was…uh…awakened in all of us. And we wanted to do something to be part of it. We had to. So, we made our own comics—two stories, one written by Tim (with art from Kendall Goode, colors by Matt Battaglia, letters by Adam Wollett) and one written by me (with art from Morgan Luthi, colors by Jordan Boyd and Dee Cunniffe, and letters by Jim Campbell).

This is a dream come true for everyone involved, and we want to share it far and wide (there's a direct download link below). Friends, family, strangers, everyone. We did it for NO other reason other than our love of Star Wars. That’s it. Please, read it, enjoy it, share if you’d like."

First Poster and Teaser Trailer for Japanese 2016 Toho film Godzilla: Resurgence

The 2014 American Godzilla reboot was a huge success.  It finished its global run in theaters with a worldwide total of $528 million making it the fourteenth highest grossing film of 2014 worldwide.  Deadline.com estimated that the film made a profit of $52.477 million!  Which is surprising since it almost didn't happen considering how protective Toho (the Japanese company that owns and created Godzilla) is about it's property, especially after the 1998 American film by Roland Emmerich was panned by critics.  I have a feeling that Toho underestimated how well the 2014 Legendary film would do, and decided to prove that they can make a film just as great if not better.  Toho has announced that Godzilla Resurgence will be released July 29, 2016 and they just put out the first poster and teaser trailer for it.  There's no glimpse of Godzilla in the trailer below unfortunately, but you can tell from the poster above that they are going for a much more horrific look than previous designs. Stay tuned for more news as they are released.

Fórn - Fórn EP [FREE Download]

I was suffering from severe sludge withdrawal the other week while I was driving back home after finally seeing Buried at Sea live. Luckily, I came across a post made by Gilead Media/Eroding Winds head Adam Bartlett about the new Fórn  Weltschmerz vinyl, which reminded me that the EP had been out for more than a week already! I immediately purchased it off of Bandcamp for the ride home – it was a Doomsgiving Night miracle!

I may have been hitting a hard heroin crash from my lack of Buried at Sea, but the methadrone treatment prescribed by Fórn was more than enough to sate my cravings. The new EP was amazing and it reminded me of how great their debut was too. When looking up said debut I was happy to find that their self-titled demo EP was actually up for free download/donation! The two track beast of a release from the Boston band may only be barely 14 minutes long, but each and every second is as crushing as the last. You can download the EP below and be sure to check out their official debut "The Departure of Consciousness" as well as the vinyl for Weltschmerz!

Napalm Death, Melvins, Melt Banana 2016 Tour

Grind godfathers Napalm Death and seminal sludge drone gods Melvins have just announced a huge US tour together for next year (with one date in Vancouver.)  As if those two legendary groups touring together wasn't enough - Japanese noise rock group Melt Banana has been added as support for the tour!  If this isn't the best tour in the past decade I don't know what is!  Here's what the two bands had to say about the upcoming tour:

"We have been talking about doing a tour like this for a long time so we are thrilled it's finally happening," says Napalm Death bass player Shane Embury. "Having been long time fans and friends of the Melvins we are very happy to be embarking on this six-week tour of musical madness with them and Melt Banana. Expect the unexpected!"

Melvins' singer/guitar player Buzz Osborne added: "Napalm Death sounds like a gorilla on LSD firing a machine gun… and I mean that in a good way. We're happy to be heading out with the ultimate grindcore pioneers." You can check out all the dates after the jump below ~GodzIL

Aesop Rock & Homeboy Sandman - LICE EP [FREE]

Aesop Rock is a legend in underground Hip Hop and Homeboy Sandman is an Idol Threat favorite – so needless to say a collaborative effort from these two MCs would be a big deal here. Canadian Label Handshake Inc. Up for Sale on Craigslist

This is an interesting turn of events.  Handshake Inc. is/was a Canadian record label ran by Dave Hall that also dabbled in releasing movies and books.  The label has put out releases from various extreme metal bands such as Rwake, defunct grind favorites Gridlink, Japanese band Sigh, fellow Canadians Fuck the Facts and the Maryland Deathfest: The Movie II DVD.  The label has also recently put out a book titled "Perpetual Conversion: 30 Years and Counting in the Life of Metal Veteran Dan Lilker" current/former member of Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, Storm Troopers of Death, and Brutal Truth.  The book was written by Chicago's own Dave Hofer, drummer for Chicago Thrash Ensemble.  It includes rare photos, interviews with Lilker and people that have worked with him (such as Scott Ian and Kevin Sharp), and even reprints of old reviews of his projects.

I say that Handshake 'is/was' a label because owner Dave Hall apparently closed up shop in October citing health issues as the reason.  What is crazy is that he has also put the label up for sale on Craigslist for $5,000! (I'm assuming CAD.)  The purchase includes their back catalogue of EPs, LPs, 3 DVD titles and one book title. Also included with the sale are North American and International distribution, digital royalties, press contacts, remaining stock, 2k Twitter followers and Facebook page with 2k likes.  This seems like a pretty good deal for those that can afford it and are interested in running a label, and it is definitely not something that comes along very often especially in the indie scene.  It will be interesting to see if this does get sold and how that will unfold.  Check out the Craiglist link below and you can read his full announcement of the label closure after the jump.

Constantine Fan Petition Started to Move Show to new Network

It has been awhile since NBC decided to not pick up the Constantine show for a second season. Since then fans have been clamoring for a way to save the show about the famed DC/Vertigo occult detective character. Even actors such as William Shatner and Stephen Amell joined in on the crusade, which probably led to the crossover event with his Arrow tv show. The episode, titled “Haunted,” sparked an 11% ratings increase in the show’s core demographic. Matt Ryan was perfect as the Hellblazer, and it seems that fans of the Arrow agree.

Now a Change.org petition, titled “Save Constantine,” has popped up in hopes to help move the show onto another network. Executive producer David Goyer has stated that part of the reason why Constantine failed was because NBC was “the wrong channel” for such material. The petitioners agree and have listed The CW, El Rey Network, Yahoo Screen, Netflix, and USA as possible replacement homes for the show.

I think the El Rey Network would be a great place for the show, and I have doubts that Netflix would pick it up considering their contracts with Marvel. Constantine is now officially a part of the Arrowverse, along with The Flash and upcoming show Legends of Tomorrow, so it would be in the best interest of The CW to expand on that fanbase. ~SumOne

Marvel's Jessica Jones #1 [FREE Digital Comic]

Back in 2013 Marvel announced that they will be releasing some TV shows directly to Netflix, and launched Daredevil earlier this year as the first of those properties. The others that were announced included a Jessica Jones series, Luke Cage, Iron Fist – and a major team-up of said characters with a Defenders TV event.  A month ago a Punisher series was added to the mix with speculation that it will be pushing the Iron Fist property to be a Netflix movie as opposed to a series.

Marvel & Netflix is amping up the marketing for the upcoming release of the next series Jessica Jones, and released the above trailer in anticipation of it.  Marvel has also teamed up with digital comic provider Comixology and is giving away Marvel's Jessica Jones #1 for FREE for a limited time. This incarnation of Jessica Jones was first introduced in Alias; a comic book series created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos. It was published by Marvel Comics under Marvel's MAX imprint for a total of 28 issues from 2001 to 2004. In it Jessica Jones was a former costumed superhero named Jewel who retired to become a private investigator, and that plot looks to be the basis for this new Netlflix series. All episodes will be available for streaming Nov 20, 2015 on Netflix, and you can download the free digital comic below.

Loaf Muzik - Live from the Dungeon [FREE Mixtape]

Team Backpack is a media company that, at the risk of oversimplifying, highlights lyricism in Hip Hop by organizing events where underground and up-and-coming rappers can showcase their skills.  Verses, originality and expertise are valued over record sales and the true art of the MC can shine in the form of its most primal state: the cypher.  It was in one of these cypher videos that I came across the New York city foursome Loaf Muzik.  The collective consists of Shadow the Great, Kidaf, Oso Dope and Shine Sinatra and their sound and emphasis on lyricism harkens back to the Golden Era of 90s Hip Hop.  Their music not only brings back memories of underground New York acts like the Duck Down family and of course the Wu, but their rhythm and bounce also brings to mind the West Coast underground greats such as Souls of Mischief and the rest of the Hieroglyphics crew.   By their own admission in the hyper energetic posse cut 'Shinobi Warz' they are here to "resurrect boom bap from that tomb" and though their sound is retro Loaf Muzik definitely have a bright future ahead.  Download their free mixtape "Live From the Dungeon" at the link below.

Marvel Studios Phase 3 Updates Announced, along with confirmation for an Ant-Man Sequel

Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has officially reached its conclusion with the release of Marvel’s “Ant-Man” this past Summer, so now seems like the perfect time to announce Phase 3! This phase includes a sequel to said film, with Paul Rudd returning as Scott Lang alongside Hope Van Dyne on July 6, 2018 with Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (this will mark the first Marvel Studios film that is named after a heroine.)  Marvel’s “Black Panther” starring Chadwick Boseman is moving up to a February 16, 2018 release and Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” will land on March 8, 2019.  Additionally there will be three untitled Marvel Studios films coming out on May 1, 2020, July 10, 2020, and November 6, 2020.

Phase 3 looks pretty eventful as things seem to be moving along smoothly; rumors are that Black Panther may have found a writer with Marvel In-house writer Joe Robert Cole.  Cole is also attached to pen Marvel’s “Inhumans” which will likely be one of the untitled films announced for Phase 3.  No one has been cast for the role of Captain Marvel as of yet, but the rumors are that the short list includes Emily Blunt (Looper, Edge of Tomorrow) Charlize Theron (too many awesome movies to name) and Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.) MMA fighter Ronda Rousey has also been campaigning for the role, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige proclaiming that he “loves” the fact that she is campaigning for it (which is a rather ambiguous statement.)  Others have also campaigned for Vikings star Katheryn Winnick, an idea we thoroughly endorse!

Ant-Man has earned $178.5M domestically and $231.3M internationally for a global total of $409.8M. It's the #9 film of the year domestically.  It will open in its final international market, China, on October 16. The movie followed one of this year’s biggest blockbusters, “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which has earned $458.9M domestically and $946M internationally for a global total of $1,404.9M, making it the #2 film of the year domestically and the #6 film of all time globally.

Stay tuned for more news to come. ~GodzIL

Dark Horse to release Mœbius Library in an upcoming Hardcover Series

Independent Comic book company Dark Horse (home to Hellboy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and dozens of other popular licensed and independent titles) has just announced that they will be releasing the library of Mœbius in a series of hardcover volumes available for the first time in nearly 20 years!  Mœbius (real name Jean Giraud) was a highly influential artist whose work has helped to define the landscape of science fiction and fantasy comics. He was also frequently showcased in film, with his work being used or inspiring movies such as Alien, Tron, The Fifth Element and more (he has also helped with  set and character design for Alejandro Jodorowsky's infamously unreleased treatment of DUNE.)  The legendary artist passed away on March 10, 2012.

Mœbius has been a huge inspiration for illustrators everywhere, so this is a monumental announcement to say the least!  “As a true visionary in the comics medium, it is a pleasure to once again publish collections of Mœbius’ work,” said Dark Horse president and publisher Mike Richardson. “His influence on contemporary comics is undeniable, and it’s a true honor to be working with Isabelle Giraud, his wife and partner, to help ensure that his legacy will continue to live on for a new generation of readers.”

More information on The Mœbius Library will be available soon, so check back for updates.

Run the Jewels - Meow the Jewels [FREE Download] + Adult Swim Single

Last September around the time the second Run the Jewels album was set to be released - a Kickstarter program was started to raise money for a remix of it.  But this was no ordinary remix album.  El-P (one half of the Run the Jewels duo that also includes rapper Killer Mike) infamously tweeted that if they raised $40,000 he would release a remix of the album using only cat sounds.  What started as a joke snowballed into something huge as famous producers such as Prince Paul, Bauer and Just Blaze and more all started saying that they would sign on to the project if it was made a reality!  Just Blaze even offered to release a kit of all his drums from 2001-2005 if this came to fruition. El-P also stated that if the 40K Kickstarter goal to fund the project was reached he would donate his portion of the money to a charity directly benefiting the families of Eric Garner and Mike Brown.

Needless to say the goal was reached, and a year later MEOW THE JEWELS is here for free download!  There's even a brown vinyl version available for purchase that has FAUX FUR on the cover!  No need to fret about the high price tags either, all profits from the sales of the vinyl of this album will be going to charity.  As a bonus we have also linked the first single from the soundtrack to Shan Nicholson's recent documentary Rubble Kings. The film chronicles the gang violence of Seventies New York City – and how hip-hop culture arose from it.  The track is is produced by RTJ-collaborator Little Shalimar and is being released for free download courtesy of Adult Swim who will also be releasing a limited edition t-shirt / art print (linked below as well.)

Ruby the Hatchet - Ouroboros [FREE Download]

I saw Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats at the Metro this past weekend and they killed it.  It's amazing that just the year before they were playing the [much smaller] Empty Bottle, it seems their popularity is growing rapidly by the minute.  They're currently on a North American Tour in support of their new album "The Night Creeper" and they've brought a few like-minded bands with them for support.  It's been a long time since I've seen an opening band that I've never heard of that has blew me away, and New Jersey doom quartet Ruby the Hatchet did just that!  Their retro psych rock hooked me instantly after hearing their organ player and it seemed I wasn't the only one since the Metro roared with approval after every song.  After buying their latest album "Valley of the Snake" I was excited to see that their 2012 album Ouroboros was actually available for free download on their Bandcamp!  You can download said album below and catch them and Uncle Acid on their remaining North American tour dates, and be sure to pick up Valley of the Snake and The Night Creeper if you do so! Begotten - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [FREE Download]

This is an absolute find! The original soundtrack to the 90’s 'WTF am I watching' cult classic film; Begotten has been released as a free download. Although it seems to be mastered as one long track, the Bandcamp page does provide track titles that correspond to occasional audible breaks in the music. The first track ‘Undead’ recalls the Residents at their most ominous, with its haunting synths and the constant hum in the background. The second track ‘The Dark Fair’ starts off kind of dance-y with a stuttering rhythm that soon overtaken by those haunting synths. One track features some neoclassical piano that borders on new age, which I can't recall being in the film. Quite unsurprisingly, there is a large chunk of industrial ambience that recalls the soundtracks from other dark, bleak black & white cult films such as Eraserhead and Tetsuo The Iron Man. While it doesn't quite measure up to those soundtracks, it’s a mostly interesting listen in its own right. ~P

Roche Limit: Clandestiny #1 [FREE Download]

The Roche Limit is the minimum distance to which a large satellite can approach its primary body without being torn apart by tidal forces. It also happens to be the name of a popular Sci-fi Image comic about a colony of the same name:  "...Roche Limit is a colony situated on the cusp of a mysterious energy anomaly, is a melting pot of crime and terrible secrets. When Bekkah Hudson goes missing, the search to find her will plunge her sister and a cadre of the colony's underworld figures into an odyssey that reveals a grim future for mankind."  The series was created by illustrator Vic Malhotra and writer Michael Moreci who also created Burning Fields, Hoax Hunters and has also written Hack/Slash, Dawn of the Planet of Apes, and The Shadow.

Clandestiny is the second volume of the series and starts 75 years after the events that [*spoiler] left the Roche Limit colony in flames: "...When a crew of military and science personnel are sent to the forgotten and desolate planet on a mysterious expedition, they quickly learn its dark secrets—and that their mission is not what they thought it to be. With danger lurking all around, the crew members fight to find a way off the planet and resist the mysterious presence that haunts them all."

Image comics has graciously put the first issue of the new volume up for free download for a limited time, so act fast and pick up the rest of the series if you like what you read:

Adult Swim Singles Presents 19 weeks of Free Music featuring: THOU

Adult Swim is a cable network that plays unorthodox comedy and adult animation. Their connection with the weird has earned their shows cult followings and a place at the cool kids table. This has often manifested as collaborations with independent music. Adult Swim's latest collaboration has them working with 19 different artists in 19 weeks, releasing a free track in conjunction with a shirt designed for that specific track (not free of course.)

The eight week had the show team up with the mighty THOU to release a track titled "Eyehatethou," an obvious nod to Eyehategod fellow New Orleans residents and sludge metal legends.  Thou stays true to form in this single by releasing a heavy as fuck track of body-dragging riffage.  You can stream or download the track below as well as find links to the other weeks' singles (the Thou track is from the 8th week) and links to purchase the shirts.

DJ QBert Presents: HARD BOILED SCRAMBLED EGG Break Mix Part 1 & 2 [FREE]

DJ QBert - the man, the myth, the legend - should require no introduction.  The pioneer of scratch released two albums last year, one of which made it to our Top Albums of the Year list.  It seems he isn't slowing down as he has already released 3 mixes this year.  Mass Appeal magazine premiered the first two of an apparent four part mix series titled HARD BOILED SCRAMBLED EGG. The first is billed as “an odyssey of future bass music,” with Q combining old school funk, soul and rock breaks for a fast-paced mix. The second mix showcases even more funk influences and amps up the energy taking the listeners on a journey that’s “a fast break from the bass.” It should go without saying that these mixes are essential listening, especially since you can download them for FREE! (click on the down arrow underneath the stream in each link.)  You should hurry too because with the recent troubles that Soundcloud has been having artists' tracks and mixes are being taken down left and right with no warning. ~GodzIL

Prefuse 73 - Themes for a 2005 SAAB (9/3 Wagon): A Commuter’s Lament [FREE Mix via FACT Magazine]

Guillermo Scott Herren is a Miami-born/Atlanta-raised producer that has released music under a ton of different names and groups throughout the years including Delarosa & Asora, Risill, Savath & Savalas,Diamond Watch Wrists and Piano Overlord. Despite all these projects he is probably most well-known for the alternative Hip Hop beats he makes as Prefuse 73, a project which was a mainstay for famed British electronic label Warp Records. After years of albums on Warp (and a brief stint with his own label Yellow Year Records) he now has plans to release 2 EPs and an album entitled Rivington Não Rio through NY label Temporary Records Limited this year.

In addition to these records he has teamed up with UK music magazine FACT to release a mix titled "Themes for a 2005 SAAB (9/3 Wagon): A Commuter’s Lament" which features three unheard new Prefuse tracks (two of which will feature on a new EP due in July, Every Color of Darkness) as well as music by Obey City, Nils Frahm, De La Soul, Flying Lotus and more. You can stream and download the mix below through the Soundcloud link, and a full tracklist can be found after the jump.

Grant Morrison Announced as new Editor-in-Chief of Heavy Metal Magazine

It has just been announced that legendary comic book writer Grant Morrison has been named the new Editor in Chief of Heavy Metal Magazine. Heavy Metal was created in 1977 as the U.S. version of the French adult comics magazine Metal Hurlant. It quickly gained it's own identity and grew into a highly popular adult magazine specializing in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror comics. It published works from many legends from inside and out of the comic field including Moebius, H.R. Giger, Bernie Wrightson, Richard Corben, Howard Chaykin, and Walter Simonson.

It also featured short prose fiction and interviews with alternative filmmakers like Federico Fellini and Roger Corman. The magazine even dove into film-making themselves when they released their eponymous animated cult-classic in 1981.  For awhile, the magazine was owned and published by Kevin Eastman the co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, until he sold the magazine to digital and music veteran David Boxenbaum and film producer Jeff Krelitz in January 2014.

Although comics have long been a part of "Heavy Metal" magazine, the company had never actually published standalone comic books themselves. However, that changed last year when former Image Comics title "Hoax Hunters" became the first series released by the publishing company, so it's fitting that they've recruited Grant Morrison as their new Editor in Chief.

Boxenbaum & Krelitz are hoping that the Scottish counterculture icon can breath new "punk energy" into the magazine, and it's hard to argue that the creator of The Invisibles, Filth, and the writer who revitalized Animal Man, X-Men and JLA doesn't have the track record to do so. Be on the lookout for Grant's first issue early next year (pictured above) and stay tuned to Idol Threat for further updates. - GodzIL

AFROPUNK Chicago June 4th, 2015 [FREE Show]

Originally a 2003 film by Matthew Morgan and James Spooner spotlighting Black Punks in America, AFROPUNK has since spawned a movement revolving around festivals, a forum and community of a rising culture.  The festivals were an extension of the Liberation Sessions, a live performance series hosted by Spooner.  The festivals gained momentum through the media and features at CMJ and SXSW until 2005 when the first annual AFROPUNK Festival debuted at Brooklyn Academy of Music.

After years of offering great, alternative multi-cultural music fests in New York Afropunk has decided to take the show on the road including a stop in Chicago!  Afropunk Chicago will take place June 4th at an undisclosed [fairly new] venue as the next stop on The Most Wicked Party Event Series, a event series sponsored by Redd’s Wicked Apple and Mango alcoholic beverages.  This show will feature performances by Detroit rapper/Fool's Gold signee Danny Brown and former Chicago native comedian Hannibal Buress, along with Chicago's own [Hollywood] HOLT who has just recently signed to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music.  The event will be hosted by D.R.E.S. tha BEATnik and will also highlight acclaimed Chicago Afrofuturism visual artist Hebru Brantly and Max Sansing.

This is a very eclectic lineup (especially considering that HOLT is now singing instead of rapping) but we would expect nothing less from Afropunk.  The night will also double as a celebration of Hebru and of HOLT's recent signing.  The event is also FREE with the secret location being revealed once you RSVP with your email.  This is a 21+ so click below to RSVP only if you're over 21 years old.

Charles Hamilton - Discography [FREE Download]

Charles Hamilton has led a career of many ups and downs. The young Harlem rapper gained much hype early on in High School and graced the cover of the XXL's 2009 Freshmen issue after signing a record deal with Interscope Records in 2008. He was well known to battle MCs and participated in cyphers with many up and coming lyricists including a young Rone and a pre-famous Kendrick Lamar, and established artists such as Kanye West, The Game and Slaughterhouse. Known for his ability to freestyle, penchant for rocking pink clothes and an affinity to Sonic the Hedgehog - it seemed that Hamilton had the skills and persona to go far. Unfortunately, despite a multitude of mixtape releases Charles was dropped from Interscope on September 19, 2009 before being able to release his official debut. He would then suffer many other setbacks such as self-imposed and court-ordered psychiatric treatment, being assaulted by his rapper girlfriend and being arrested for assaulting a police officer. In an interview in 2015 Hamilton would reveal that he suffered from bipolar disorder, depression and thoughts of suicide which was no doubt aggravated by the stress of the music industry and his addictions to Heroin and Psilocybin mushrooms.

Fortunately it seems that his career is once again in an upswing after handling all his personal demons. He is now signed to Republic Records and has even released a new single, "New York Raining" with Rita Ora that was featured on the soundtrack to the hit FOX TV show Empire. Hamilton’s return would come with a price however; as he announced that he will no longer be releasing any free music – not even to Youtube. In reaction to this Hamilton has posted what looks to be his entire discography for free download. This makes for a great purging of his past as well as a thank you to his fans, and a somewhat daunting introduction to newcomers. You can download the massive text file below which contains links to nearly every previous mixtape, EP, single and unreleased tracks that Charles Hamilton has created, and be on the lookout for his upcoming debut album:
