Tachyon Ghetto Blaster (Orko Eloheim & Kaigen)

Orko Eloheim is a prolific, underground avant-garde rapper/producer from the west coast of America.  San Diego, California to be exact.  Besides his solo work Orko is also known for being one-half of Nephlim Modulation Systems; along with MC Bigg Jus member of legendary underground New York Hip Hop group Company Flow.  Now Mr. Eloheim has formed another duo with Kaigen.  Kaigen is also a rapper/producer, but hails from Tokyo, Japan.  Together they form Tachyon Ghetto Blaster and have a free EP out now through Fake Four, Inc.

Kaigen is no stranger to west coast collaborations, as he has worked with many other Cali MCs such as 2Mex, Awol One, Busdriver, Myka 9 and Thavius Beck.  He is also the head of the Japan division of Fake Four, Inc.  I've always loved how the Japanese language sounded in rap, and Kaigen's rapid near-arrhythmic flow is especially captivating against his and Orko's futuristic beats.  The download for their 4-song debut EP01 includes the instrumentals of the tracks and features LA rapper Mestizo.  The EP seems to only be free until this Friday so act quickly, or you can throw a few bucks their way too:

Ehnahre - Discography [FREE for a limited time]

I first discovered Boston band Ehnahre in 2008 when they released their first official album "The Man Closing Up" and was immediately blown away.  They play an avant-garde version of doom, blending experimental jazz and metal in a way that has evolved with every release since their inception in 2006.  Their membership has evolved every album as well, with bassist/vocalist Ryan McGuire and guitarist/vocalist John Carchia being the only consistent members.  Before forming (or 'reforming') most of the original band did a stint filling in the roster of fellow experimentalists Kayo Dot before leaving in 2006.

I say 'reform' because three of the members was already a band in high school and first called themselves Negative Reasoning, named after a song title on Eyehategod's "Dopesick" album: 'Non Conductive Negative Reasoning.'  They frequently abbreviated the name, referring to themselves as NR. When they reformed in 2006 after leaving Kayo Dot; former member D.J. Murray suggested they take NR and spell it phonetically. Thus became Ehnahre.

The band is currently recording the followup to their 2012 album "Old Earth" entitled "Douve," and have decided to give us a little treat in the interim.  All their previous material available on Bandcamp will now be "Name Your Price" until they are done recording "Douve."  So take advantage of this generosity quickly and donate a few duckets to them in the process if you can!

Planning For Burial - How to Dress for Burial [Free]

Purportedly nothing more than drunken piss takes by Thom of Planning For Burial, this album is a lovely concoction of Twin Peaks style soundscapes and abstract synth-pop. The album title is of course a reference to slow-mo R&B act How to Dress Well, though this mixtape has no R&B influence to speak of, and the only resemblance to HTDW would be the ghostliness of it all.

Untitled no. 1 is reminiscent of ‘In the Air Tonight’ but with drones and Untitled no. 2 sounds like Wreck & Reference at their sweetest/prettiest.  Untitled no. 3 is the weakest of the lot; a funeral mope that goes on forever. Untitled no. 4 has some pounding drum machine but the track never seems to really take off, while Untitled no. 5 ends the record on a hushed contemplative mood.  Overall this worth checking out if you are a fan of Planning For Burial. It’s currently up on Bandcamp as a “Name Your Price” option so you can download it for free, but we highly suggest contributing some money at least [there was a cassette version available which is now sold out.] ~P

STN MTN/Kauai [FREE Download]

In October Childish Gambino put out his new mixtape STN MTN/KAUAI, a release that combines his 7th mixtape and 2nd EP. This free mixtape comes barely 10 months after the release of his last album "Because the Internet", and just may even be better than it as well. STN MTN is hosted by DJ Drama for his Gangsta Grillz series, which some may see as an odd pairing (probably even more so than the Little Brother Gangsta Grillz mixtape.) The collaboration works well however, as the pair creates an ode to Atlanta complete with skits imagining near-future Gambino as a multi-platinum, commercial success and ATL hero. The skits make sense with the album title referencing Stone Mountain and Glover spitting over well-known Atlanta instrumentals - it’s obvious that his hometown is important to him and recognition from that city even more so. This theme binds the two releases together, making his latest project one of his most cohesive.

The mixtape/EP features appearances from Kari Faux, Young Scooter and R O Y A L T Y (and Jaden Smith?!) as well as a few covers, remixes and surprises. Gambino does a remix of Kari Faux’s No Small Talk off the mixtape "Laugh Now, Die Later" and offers “U Don't Have to Call,” which is somewhat of an Usher cover, where he lays down some spoken word bars after singing the first verse of the song. Soon after the release of STN MTN some studious fans on the Childish Gambino message board discovered a hidden acapella within the code of the album. They later deduced that it matched up perfectly with the instrumental remix of 3005 on STN MTN, and Gambino confirmed it in a Tweet shortly thereafter. The mixtape ends with a tribute to the DJs and influential people who’ve supported Gambino throughout his career with his final track on the mixtape “Go DJ.” STN MTN/KAUAI proves that Donald Glover has come a long way from being an actor cum rapper and cements his place as a viable musician in his own right. ~Sumone

Fuck the Facts - Abandoned EP [Free, basically]

I was listening to Parlamentarisk Sodomi last night. While reveling on the pure fucking grind this one-man band from Norway puts out, I realized that he hasn't released anything under that project in almost 3 years (he is however slated to release a less traditional space-grind album this year under his project Psudoku.)

I was also thinking how Jon Chang's latest group Gridlink released Longhena this year and announced that it would be their last album. Although Japanese grind greats Swarrrm released a new album this year, it is currently unavailable in North America unless you want to pay a hefty premium to ship a copy in from Japan. All this has got me feeling that I am in desperate need of some good, new grind. Imagine my excitement when Fuck the Facts' latest EP popped up in my inbox!

Fuck the Facts are an amazing grindcore band from Quebec that has been together for almost 15 years. They released an EP titled 'Amer' last year, but haven't released a proper full length since 2011. We're still patiently waiting the followup to Die Miserable, but in the meantime Fuck the Facts have been gracious enough to pacify us with 'Abandoned!' This latest EP only has 3 songs yet is surprisingly long (as far as grind EPs go) at nearly 13 minutes. This time around there's a more noticeable melodic death metal influence going on, which adds a great thrash feel to the songs. But don't let all this melody fool you into thinking this is any less brutal, this EP still pummels and may be my favorite Fuck the Facts output in recent memory! The EP is being put out on their new independent label Noise Salvation and is currently on sale for $1 Canadian.

I know this is labeled as a free release but it's one fucking dollar, ONE FUCKING DOLLAR! You should be so lucky to get this many great tracks for the price of a single shitty bitrate iTunes track. We here at Idol Threat do know that times can get hard, and the band understands too, so if you are truly down and out you can email our site at the address to the right in the Disclaimer section and we will send you a download link (courtesy of Fuck the Facts themselves.) There is also a limited edition cassette of the EP available for those that want a physical copy. For now please check out their other releases on their Bandcamp and support. -GodzIL

Marvel Announces new Secret Wars Event, Release Alex Ross Promo Image

Looks like Marvel made a pretty big announcement yesterday at their New York City Comic Con-related event at Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. in Times Square. Starting in May 2015, Marvel will publish a new year-long "Secret Wars" event with writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Esad Ribic. The original Secret Wars crossover in 1984 was one of the most popular and influential comic book events ever that lasted over 12 issues with several tie-ins bleeding into existing titles over the course of the year. The original Secret Wars also had heavy merchandising support in the form of a toy line from Mattel. Marvel plans to follow that tradition with three of their merchandising partners - current Marvel toy license-holder Hasbro, Gentle Giant and retail chain Hot Topic well into 2016.

This announcement was also followed by the reveal of a gorgeous promo painting done by Alex Ross. The first Secret Wars followed a cosmic entity of immeasurable power named “The Beyonder” who teleported both heroes and supervillains against their will to "Battleworld", a planet created by the Beyonder in a distant galaxy. He was fascinated by the heroes of Earth and pitted them against villains promising their heart’s desires to the victors. This storyline also introduced the wildly popular Venom symbiote suit into Spidey-lore.

From the looks of the painting it seems that this new Secret War involves superheroes and their future, past and alternate-Earth counterparts. Featured prominently are the past Thor, Iron Man and Captain America fighting the current female Thor, Sam Wilson Cap and Iron Man (in a new suit!) Surrounding them we see the alternate-future daughter of Steve Rogers -The American Dream, the Earth X future version of Daredevil, Iron Man's evil brother Arno Stark from the year 2020, the Miles Morales Spider-Man from the Ultimate universe and many more variations of Marvel Heroes.

What we DON’T see are any Fantastic Four or X-Men characters, or the regular 616 Earth version of Spider-Man (Peter Parker.) This comes as no surprise when we take into account recent rumors that Marvel is pulling out any comic support of characters owned by other movie companies besides their own (FF and X-Men are owned by 20th Century Fox with the Spider-Man franchise being owned by Sony Pictures.) The rumors go so far as to suggest that the Fantastic Four comic will be canceled and no new X-Men characters will be created in the foreseeable future lest they become property of Fox as well. Stay tuned to Idol Threat for more news to come. -GodzIL

Tüki Save the Humans [FREE Web Comic]

Jeff Smith is the Writer/Artist/Genius behind the all ages, fantasy-comedy Bone. The series was independently published between 1991 – 2004 and has been the recipient of TEN Eisner Awards and ELEVEN Harvey Awards. After Bone’s completion and various serializations, Smith was then approached by DC Comics to work on a mini-series based on their SHAZAM character. Once that series ended he decided to return to his indie roots with another creator-owned series RASL, a sci-fi tale based around a dimension-hopping art thief with a decidedly more adult vibe to it.

He now continues in the diversity of his projects with his latest creation Tüki: Save the Humans. Tüki is a prehistoric story that follows the journey of the first human being to leave Africa. During that time Africa became very dry and the early hominids were slowly dying out, so exploration outside of Africa was necessary. Of course, in the tradition of his original epic Bone, this story has a fantasy spin to it as well. This web-series is his first book to be published in full-color (Bone and RASL was originally in black and white before being later colored for collected editions) and is available to read for FREE online!

Tüki has been ‘live’ for quite some time now, but you can start it from the very beginning of the first ‘season’ at the link below. If you like the story check out his aforementioned works and be sure to purchase Tüki: Save the Humans once it’s published in printed form! (Issue #1 is already available in the Boneville store!) - GodzIL

Merzbow X Boiler Room at Dommune [Video & Audio Download]

Boiler Room is back again with another experimental offering in their series of online concerts! This time they highlight the mighty Merzbow live from Dommune Studio in Tokyo. This set in particular is likely to confuse, or downright alienate their normal dance-seeking audience, so I commend the Boiler Room for expanding their coverage and fanbase.  This harsh noise set sees Merzbow at his best, returning to his roots of guitar pedals, contact mics and homemade instruments as opposed to the laptop noise he has been creating in previous years.  Watch the 20 minute set above and download the audio at the link below [Editors Note: The link for the audio seems to be down at the moment, we will post it once its back up again.] - GodzIL

Empty Bottle comes through once again with another free show! Just RSVP at the link below for free entry, and here's what they had to say about the lineup for this Sunday:

"From the bowels of central Ohio, BRIDESMAID has been sculpting heavier than thou, punishingly loud "doom n' roll" since their inception in 2009. As an instrumental group with two bassists, one drummer and a massive red beard, they combine to create some of the best sounds coming out of the metal underground these days. For this return trip to the Empty Bottle, BRIDESMAID will be saying goodbye to their original drummer and bringing along their new drummer for a dual drums, dual bass attack that will have you shaking in your shit-stained shorts. Opening will be local faves THE SWAN KING and new Chicago heavy-hitters, WASPKEEPER"

Teeko - Boiler Room [Video/FREE Download]

Boiler Room is a website that hosts live music sessions with an invite-only audience in mostly private locations, and then streams the performances live on their website and through services such as YouTube.  They started in March 2010 in London and has since hosted sessions with such notable artists such as Thom Yorke, Flying Lotus, Carl Cox, Erykah Badu, Madlib and more.  Though the artists they host mostly perform DJ sets, they recently hosted a session with Japanese stoner rock trio Boris and noise Godfather Merzbow.

The session we're featuring here is a set from turntablist/producer Teeko in San Francisco, whom famed producer Mark Ronson called "The most insane & creative turntablist I have ever worked with" and who DJ Jazzy Jeff himself said was "...the funkiest most soulful turntabilist I have ever seen..."  This is a great set that combines some live keys, a rare Vestax Controller One Turntable, and live remixing via Traktor.  You can stream it live above and also go to the link below and download the audio of the 46 minute session for free.  Definitely worth checking out, this guy deserves much more shine. -GodzIL

Mick Jenkins - The Water[s] (Free Download)

Southside Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins returns this week with his latest project “The Water[s]” and like most of his music this release is out for free download. This is his first full length album since he signed to Cinematic Music Group. I thought I posted about his other mixtapes months ago but I guess not. Hopefully this post makes up for that.

On the 2nd track THC Mick Jenkins sets up his reasoning for the album title (besides the obvious ‘flow’ references) by stating that water is the most important natural component that we have today, and that it has the ability to both heal and destroy. That’s pretty deep subject matter for a seemingly simple (if not overused) principle. Besides that the album as a whole does also have a liquid quality to it, with many of the ethereal beats sounding like they’re underwater. Yet instead of drowning or merely floating over these beats, Mick easily cuts through at the pace of a speedboat with lyrics as sharp as those found on his previous mixtapes. Much like the music of the new guard of young MCs such as Kendrick and fellow Chicagoan Chance, Mick demonstrates a love of lyricism that doesn't sacrifice musicality, and is often times a throwback to the Hip Hop of the 90s. I also appreciate the fact that he features at least one or two female rappers in his releases as well, although its hard to take focus away from Mick's lyrics which steals the show on nearly every track.

This guy’s got punchlines for days, but once I heard his rhyme scheme that ended with “everbody wanna be the back of a D. Rose” I was done. I can post more but if I did I may fuck around and make his whole album a quotable. I have a lot of favorites but the Helter Skelterish track with Joey Bada$$ is so good it makes me want an entire album of the two. Mick may rap that water is worth more than gold, but this release is worth way more than it’s free price tag. HIGHLY recommended. -GodzIL

Primitive Man - P//M & Splits [Free Download]

Denver, Colorado doom trio Primitive Man comes from pretty good stock.  Their vocalist/guitarist was a former member of defunct grind favorites Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire and blackened doom band Withered, as well as being a member of the filthy band Vermin Womb.  Their debut on Relapse Records is heavy with hate and noise, with respite from the oppressive pummeling only coming from the short blasts of blackened grind sparsed in-between the doom.  It's an impressive debut to say the least.

To follow up the beast of an album, Primitive Man has issued a heavily noise-influenced cassette titled P//M and a few splits as well.  The cassette is currently sold out but you can still pick up a few of the 7 inch splits, and all 3 releases are available for free download or donation on their Bandcamp page.  The P//M tape is harsher than their 'normal' output, but there's surprisingly a few (relatively) mellow tracks that helps you endure the barrage without taking away from the overall ambience.  If you prefer their more 'traditional' sludge tracks you can check out their splits with Xaphan and Hexis.  We on the other hand recommend getting every last ounce of music from this band that you can, because they have yet to make anything not worth owning so far.  The releases are free but as always, try and donate what you can. -GodzIL

Thou - Heathen & Compilations [FREE Downloads]

Our love of prolific New Orleans sludge masters Thou is no secret here, especially after our post about them offering [nearly] their entire discography for FREE. When it was announced that guitarist Andy Gibbs would be moving to Oakland, California we were fearful of a decline in their copious output.  Luckily our fears were assailed when they announced TWO EPs (one being a collaborative release with fellow sludgsters The Body) and another full length entitled "Heathen" all to be put out this year!  How the fuck do you top that you say? By offering 2 of those 3 releases AND MORE for FREE download/donation, that's how!

Thou has expanded upon their previous form of delivery for their free wares by creating a Bandcamp page that features most of their albums and various digital compilations of their EPs and splits.  They've also provided a thematic link to the artwork of all their Bandcamp offerings by giving them all new matching albums covers (similar to the one for Heathen featured above.)  You can download for free but we highly suggest giving some sort of donation since its almost a crime to offer all these masterpieces gratis, or purchase one or all of their vinyl and CDs at the links below -GodzIL:

Sutekh Hexen - Discography [FREE]

Yes you read that correctly, Sutekh Hexen has graciously posted pretty much their entire discography to date up for FREE download on their site!  Maybe 'graciously' isn't the correct adjective in this instance, since 'grace' may be the last word one would use to describe the music of this Oakland-based metal band. Sutekh Hexen play a form of black metal that sounds like a sea of demons trying to scream and scrape their way out of the abyss.  At times they attempt to drown the cacophony behind a drone-drenched fog, but the harsh din always finds a way to claw through the haze.  The resultant, drumless reverse-exorcism barrages your senses until they are raw - its definitely an experience that burns into your memory.

Their live shows are also an experience you won't forget; with the band being almost completely covered in an actual fog that progressively fills the room until all that's left is the spotlights behind the mist, and the harsh sound enveloping you.  This is music that deserves to be supported and it's all here for fucking FREE. We haven't seen a free discography of this caliber since we posted Thou's site! So buy a shirt, cassette, vinyl or all of the above as you download some of the best lo-fi black metal out today. -GodzIL

Yasiin Gaye: The Return (Side Two) [Free Download]

Nashville-based DJ/producer Amerigo Gazaway is back again with the sequel to his infamous Mos Def/Marvin Gaye mash-up! Yasiin Gaye: The Return (Side Two) once again combines Yasiin Bey vocals with Marvin Gaye instrumentals, but this time pairing them with mostly Marvin-produced tracks as opposed to staying strictly with his own songs. Check out what Amerigo had to say about Marvin Gaye's futuristic style of production and download the 18-track album below!:

“I wanted to build this side from more of Marvin’s original production work. He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before hip-hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other artist [Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc.] and re-present those classic Mos [Def] verses in a new context.” -GodzIL

Ungoliant - No More the World of Man [Free Download]

Ungoliant (not to be confused with the Swedish Black Metal band of the same name) was a doom metal band formed by famed underground, Oakland-based artist Skinner. The artist’s murals can be found around the world from Russia to Cuba and all across the United States. His work has also been celebrated in various publications including Juxtapoz, Hi Fructose and Beautiful/Decay. Skinner has recently provided the artwork for Mastodon’s upcoming album “Once More 'Round the Sun” which will be released June 24, 2014, via Reprise Records. Along with all this he is also a lover & creator of collectible vinyl toys and runs his own apparel label ‘Critical Hit’ which features his psychedelic art emblazoned across everything from shirts, silk-screen stickers and posters.

This is all fine and dandy but even if none of it were true, this would still be a damn fine doom album with or without the clout that Skinner’s nightmarish creations bring. Their album “No More the World of Man” is a wonderfully heavy trip just shy of 45 minutes that touches all aspects of the doom subgenre, with vocals that sound like the voice of an ancient warrior wailing victoriously over a bloody battlefield! The first track "Wretched Mind" drudges along at a pace that border on Funeral Doom territory. The second track “Mountains of Madness” picks up the speed with riffs reminiscent of the old school death/doom of bands like Finland’s Hooded Menace. The psychedelic tinge starts to creep in more and more in the next few track Politics of Misery and Unlight of Ungoliant, bringing a triumphant end to this wonderful blend of psych-sabbathian stoner sludge.

It’s a shame that the band only lasted a year, and an even bigger shame that it took me this long to discover it, but No More the World of Man is a massive memorial to the band’s short-lived term. Download the album at the link below and pray to Melkor that the band makes music again in some form or another. -GodzIL

Yasiin Bey fka Mos Def - Yasiin Gaye: The Departure [Free Download]

The artist/actor formerly known as Mos Def has been in the news of late for his supposed denial of entry into the U.S. for an upcoming tour he had planned.  If you're wondering why the lifelong Brooklyn-native needed to re-enter the states; Yasiin Bey relocated to South Africa last year in a move that he recently addressed this past March:

"...I came to Cape Town in 2009 and it just hit me. I was like, 'Yeah.' I know when a good vibe gets to you. And, you know, I thought about this place every day from when I left." (Mail & Guardian)

It's been since revealed by Yasiin Bey's close friend Abdi Hussein that he was never denied entry into the U.S., but instead chose to move his tour dates due to other projects. The recent news has got me thinking about Mos and wondering when his next project would be released, when I came across this mixtape by Amerigo Gazaway.

Amerigo Gazaway is a Nashville-based DJ/producer and son of renowned Jazz trumpeter, Gary “El Buho” Gazaway. This latest release from his *Soul Mates* series is a mash-up of Bey acapellas and deconstructed samples of Marvin Gaye’s Motown masterpieces. This may be my Mos Def nostalgia talking, or the fact that you just can't go wrong with some motherfuckin Marvin Gaye, but this 'mixtape' is fucking genius (it reminds me alot of the Max Tannone projects "Ghostfunk" and "Dub Kweli.") This release brings back the classic Mos Def we came to love and reinvents his songs with a fresh, soulful twist. It's a dream collaboration of what could've been, brought to life. This is apparently 'Side One' so a Side Two is soon to follow, and we can't wait! This is the perfect soundtrack for the Summer! Download this now before it gets taken down! ~GodzIL

Artist H.R. Giger Passes Away at 74

(February 5, 1940 –  May 12, 2014)
The man who brought us the wonderfully grotesque world of Aliens and the cover to Celtic Frost’s magnum opus “To Mega Therion” has passed away at age 74. H.R. Giger was an innovative painter, sculptor and set designer whose biomechanical style was instantly recognizable and ultimately unique. According to his museum, the artist passed away from complications he suffered after a fall. Sandra Mivelaz, administrator of the H.R. Giger museum in Gruyeres, Switzerland, told The Associated Press that Giger died in a hospital this past Monday. Born Hans Ruedi Giger on Feb. 5, 1940, in the southeastern Swiss town of Chur, Giger trained to become an industrial designer after his father insisted that he learn a proper trade. It was Giger’s mother who encouraged him to pursue his love of art. He worked on his art only at night, keeping his curtains closed and dressing mainly in black — a habit he acquired working as a draftsman because it hid the Indian ink on his clothes. H.R. was greatly influenced by the works of the American horror fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft, painters Ernst Fuchs & Salvador Dali and the night terrors he frequently suffered from. Giger lived in Zürich with his wife, Carmen Maria Scheifele Giger, who is the Director of the H.R. Giger Museum. RIP.
