San Diego Comic Con International 2013 Panel Roundup

This year's SDCC saw a host of movie and TV panels that revealed tons of new insights into upcoming features to the lucky fans that were able to attend. For those that couldn't attend we've rounded up a bunch of videos of full panels like the X-Files Anniversary Panel and Walking Dead panel! There's also news on upcoming Marvel movies such as X-Men Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy, what's in store for the last seasons of TV shows like Community and Breaking Bad, and attendees were even treated to exclusives such as a screening of the entire Pilot for ABC & Marvel's Agents of SHIELD! Possible the coolest attraction at the Con was SDCC and Legendary Picture's "Godzilla Encounter" in which fans got to walk around a destroyed Tokyo set and 'experience' exclusive video footage including life-sized silhouttes and sounds from the new Godzilla in a Universal Studios-styled walk through! Check out all the videos after the jump!

Obliteration: Signs to Relapse Records in North America

Norway Death Metal band Obliteration have just signed to Relapse Records and plan on releasing their new album next year.  The band is from the same hometown as legendary Black Metal band Darkthrone and the two guitarists are also in the excellent thrash band Nekromantheon.  Obliteration is a killer fucking band and this signing is long overdue, check out the press release from Relapse:

"Relapse Records is extremely proud to announce the North American signing of Oslo, Norway's death metal warriors Obliteration! Formed in 2001, Obliteration (Sindre Solem - guitar / vocals, Arlid Myren Torp - guitar, Didrik Telle- bass, Kristian Valbo - drums) have released one EP (Total Fucking Obliteration - 2005) and two full-lengths (Perpetual Decay - 2007, Nekropsalms - 2009) to much critical acclaim in the metal underground. Combining a cosmic blend of old school death metal mixed with the best elements of doom, punk, thrash and primitive black metal, the band has quickly built a name for themselves with their unique, repulsive style.

Obliteration recently finished recording their highly anticipated new album at their home studio in Kolbotn, Norway which will be released later this year by Relapse in North America and Indie Recordings in the rest of the world. Vocalist / guitarist Sindre Solem commented on their upcoming partnership with Relapse:

"We in Obliteration are extremly psyched that Relapse Records are going to handle the American release of our upcoming LP. Relapse have a long stream of quality metal releases, and their reach is vast, so we are honored, and confident that Relapse Records will do a stellar job in spreading the word of Obliteration. Onward hail!"

Obliteration plans to return to North America in early 2014 in support of their new record. You can stream two tracks from the band's most recent album Nekropsalms via their Bandcamp.

Planning for Burial Discography Free until Monday

By 'free' we mean it's up for "pay as you want" on Bandcamp so don't be a bunch of cheap bastards and give a little while you download all this quality music.  Hailing from New Jersey, Planning for Burial's brand of blackened doom/drone (self-described gloom/slowcore) relies heavily on post rock, and his unique blend of those influences created something memorable amidst the sea of shoegazed 'post metal' bands that have been sprouting in the past years.  The mastermind behind Planning for Burial also runs the label Music Ruins Lives and has released recordings through the Enemies List record label, which is ran by like-minded band Have a Nice Life.  There's not much time left to download so I would do so quickly and recommend using FLAC, you can always convert it to MP3s later.

SDCC 2013: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Movie Panel

We'll be updating with more recaps from this year's San Diego Comic Convention soon (it would be faster if we were actually able to attend this year) but for now we have a great video to tide you guys over.  Arguably the best thing about SDCC is the panels they have and the amount and caliber of people they are able to pull from because of the convention's pull and proximity to Hollywood.  The next best thing to attending a panel is seeing a video and above we have the full panel for the The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Movie which included Andrew Garfield and Jamie Foxx.  You even get to see Andrew Garfield start off the panel in character as Spider-Man.  Enjoy while you can because there's no way to know for sure if this will stay up for long.

Cobie Smulders Officially in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series

It’s official: Cobie Smulders is reprising her Avengers role in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.  The How I Met Your Mother star appears in the very first episode, re-teaming her with Clark Gregg’s character Agent Coulson, in a pilot that’s been kept under wraps by the network.

The writer-director of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Joss Whedon has said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly that “I wanted very much to have Cobie in the pilot because as much as anyone else, she IS SHIELD... She’s cool and commanding, and has the dry humor that plays so well with Clark’s. Also, if she’s in it I get to hang out with Cobie.”

Smulders will be reprising her role as Agent Maria Hill from the 2012 Avengers movie blockbuster. She’s expected to occasionally appear in ABC’s TV spinoff but it will obviously have to revolve on her schedule with filming the last season of How I Met Your Mother on rival network CBS. We can only hope that Smulders will join the S.H.I.E.L.D. team full time after HIMYM ends if the ABC series returns for a second season.

According to Josh's brother and collaborator Jed Whedon the show will work in tandem with the Marvel films, both past and upcoming. In fact, the first episode may pick up a storyline from one of Marvel's recent blockbuster Iron Man 3. “We plan on trying to weave in between the films and try to make them more rewarding on both ends,” says Jed. “In any of these [episodes], you can always ask: ‘Why don’t they just call Iron Man?’” Yeah, that would be annoying! So our next question is: Why don’t they just call Iron Man? “They are aware of each other,” Whedon says of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team and the metal-suited Malibu playboy, “but they do have to have their own lives.”

The heavily buzzed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is making its San Diego Comic-Con debut today at a panel from 1:45 to 3PM PDT— and fans in the room are apaprently going to get a big surprise.  Stay tuned to Idol Threat for more news.

Kick Ass 2 Director will Write and Likely Direct X-Force Movie, Ryan Reynolds to star as Deadpool

A few months ago X-MenFilms.com discovered that 20th Century Fox registered the domain name X-ForceMovie.com. Earlier today X-Force creator Rob Liefeld said on Twitter that “Ryan Reynolds IS DEADPOOL! Cable could be many…” confirming that an X-Force movie is indeed in the works and that Reynolds would be reprising his role as Deadpool the former villain/mercenary turned anti-hero (hopefully in a different incarnation with a re-grown mouth!) No word yet on who will play Cable, the leader of X-Force who also happens to be the time-traveling son of Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey/Marvel Girl. Soon after this news was announced The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Kick Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow is slated to write the screenplay. X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuller Donner is producing X-Force and it is said that Wadlow is writing with an eye to direct.

X-Force was an early 1990s spinoff from Marvel Comics flagship Uncanny X-Men comics created by Rob Liefeld with help from writer Fabian Nicieza, who provided the dialogue for Liefeld’s plots. The title rose from the ashes of the New Mutants comic where Liefeld got his start with the characters, and created many new characters such as Domino, Shatterstar, Cable and Deadpool. With the help of his rising popularity with X-Force, Liefeld left Marvel Comics in 1992 to form Image Comics with 6 other Marvel artists.

Will the X-Force movie tie into 20th Century Fox's upcoming The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past movies? Hopefully we'll get some major announcements next week at Comic-Con International San Diego.

Martial Artist Jim Kelly Dies at 67

May 5, 1946 – June 29, 2013
Actor and famed American Martial Artist Jim Kelly died Saturday of cancer at his home in San Diego. He was 67.  He was the star of several martial arts-themed blaxploitation movies in the 70s including Black Belt Jones, Three the Hard Way and Black Samurai - but was most notably known for his co-starring role with Bruce Lee in the legendary movie "Enter the Dragon."  Kelly began his martial arts training in 1964 and moved on to win four prestigious championships in 1971, including the World Middleweight Karate title at the 1971 Long Beach International Karate Championships.  Jim opened his own Dojo in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles where he was discovered and cast for Enter the Dragon.  Kelly was also a professional tennis player on the USTA Senior Men's Circuit.  RIP to a true artist.
