Plague Bringer returns with a new track and an upcoming Metro Show

Chicago industrial grind duo Plague Bringer are back with a new track "Wolves" and an upcoming show announcement!  Featuring guitarist/drum programmer Greg Ratajczak and vocalist Josh Rosenthal, Plague Bringer was formed in 2002 after Greg was finished helping engineer Modest Mouse's album "The Moon and Antarctica."  A death/grind band at heart; Plague Bringer stands out from the crowd with their wide range of influences which includes Tool, Godflesh and Ministry (they even released a cover of "Burning Inside" as a single with former Ministry member Chris Connelly.)  Their last CD "Life Songs in a Land of Death" was released in 2008 and I believe their last show was in 2010 at Record Store Day in Reckless Records.  A rough mix of their new track Wolves can be streamed below or on their bandcamp.  Plague Bringer will be playing at the Cold Waves Festival on September 27, 2013 at the METRO in Chicago.

Mad Tyrant - The Execution of William Kemmler [CD Release & Free Download]

Chicago harsh noise act Mad Tyrant consists of only one member (Mal Lakas), who has a unique way of recording music. No, I will not reveal the techniques involved; the artist prefers to let judgment be placed solely on the work itself, not what went into making it. Recorded back in January 2011, The Execution of William Kemmler finally sees a physical release; it features three coruscating tracks full of bleeps and bloops being turned inside out and destroyed into infinity. Now on UK label Must Die Records with liner notes from musician/writer Josh Langhoff. It was mastered by Jonathan Baxter and also includes a CD only bonus track mastered by Greg Ratajczak of Plague Bringer.

Dark Horse Announces NEW Shaolin Cowboy & Elfquest Comics at C2E2

Dark Horse Comics announced this past weekend at C2E2 that it will be publishing new comics of Geof Darrow's Shaolin Cowboy and the legendary Elfquest Series! The Matrix concept artist Geof Darrow originally released Shaolin Cowboy in 2004 on Burlyman Entertainment, with the seventh issue coming out in 2007.  Shaolin Cowboy returns nearly six years later in a three issue monthly story arc with the second issue clocking in at a whopping 64 pages!  The creator of "Hard Boiled" and "The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot" is one of the most detailed artists out there and the continuation of this series has been long overdue!

Elfquest was created by Wendy and Richard Pini over 35 years ago and has accumulated quite a cult following.  The first issue of the new Elfquest will arrive this fall and will be the prologue to Elfquest: The Final Quest, which is currently being serialized on BoingBoing (FOR FREE!) Following that, Dark Horse will release The Final Quest alongside all-new editions of previously published material. Dark Horse also announced that they plan to publish comics based on the popular video game Halo and a new Hellboy original graphic novel.  With these announcements, the absence of a DC booth and Dark Horse slashing the prices on everything in their booth to 50% off on the last day (with four for a $1 single comics!) this company may have just been the best booth at this year's C2E2!

Iron Man 3 Review & Trailer

I saw an advanced screening of Iron Man 3 today and was going to write a review but why bother? It would just be full of a bunch of spoilers and geek outs so I'll just post the trailer and say GO SEE IRON MAN 3! Each and every actor down to the small players did an amazing job and the main cast's chemistry is undeniable! All I can say without spoiling anything is that Ben Kingsley will surprise you! One of the best third installments of a movie franchise I've seen in recent memory! There's even rumors that a fourth is in the works as well.  In theaters in North America Friday May 3, 2013.

Idol Threat's Guide to C2E2 2013

C2E2 has been getting better every year and this year marks the most organized and entertaining expo yet! Tomorrow will be the busiest day of the con and that means you'll need a guide to help you get the most out of your visit.  Here's some things to help you filter out the convention confusion.

The main big change this year is the inclusion of "The Block" which C2E2 bills as "a show within a show."  If you don't count Artist Alley, The Block occupies the very middle of the convention floor and houses tons of artists from the underground culture such as Jim Mahfood (Grrl Scouts, Clerks, Tank Girl), Buff Monster (Juxtapoz, Nylon), L'Amoure Supreme (Mishka, Nike), David Crossland, boutique toy creator Galaxxor and infamous Oakland artist Skinner who has done art for Kvelertak, Every Time I Die and Mastodon.  This is an amazing addition to the con and brings some well deserved attention to artists that don't normally make it out here.  Visit Skinner at the Critical Hit booth (965) and Jim Mahfood & David Crossland next to him at the Nerd City booth.  You can also watch all weekend as Buff Monster and L'Amoure Supreme work on a giant colloborative mural in the middle of The Block.

Another great highlight is The Variant Stage near the back with the autographs section.  Friday featured such content as a Puppet Show, Stand up Comedy, a theatre stage reading of a comic book, and a Buffy the Musical Shadowcast.  Saturday will feature Nerd Trivia at 12:45pm, The Nerdologues Comedy show at 4:30pm and a Cosplay Contest at 5:45pm among other things.

As always the best part of almost every con is the Artist Alley.  This section is divided alphabetically in rows with the main row/aisle being an expanded section between 'I' and 'J.'  This aisle is home to the creators of the Idol Threat featured comic Hoax Hunters.  Drop by I4 to say hi to Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley - you can pick up the latest issues of Hoax Hunters or the first trade, and some awesome prints or a mini-artbook from Steve or the amazing new trade paperback of ReincareNATE from Michael.  IT faves GregNFake may be absent and in Mexico right now but you may run into their collaborator Marc Koprinarov who will be hanging at the Hoax Hunters booth.  Speaking of GregNFake, they have recently did an awesome back-up story to the the Heavy Metal Magazine-esque comic Doctor Muscles comic. You can check them out at the Bogus Books booth at P6.  Other Idol Threat recommends include Bill Reinhold (Badger/Punisher) at Q1, Brian Wood (DMZ, X-Men) at O18, Geof Darrow (Shaolin Cowboy/Matrix) at P1, Chris Burnham (Batman) at B1 and Tony Moore (Walking Dead) at A10.  On a side note both Doug Manhke (Green Lantern) at A1 and Phil Hester (Green Arrow) at C10 are selling original comic book pages for $20 each! Most artists sells their original art pages for upwards of $50-$200 each so this is an insane deal that everyone should take advantage of.

There's also some big time nerd names coming down for the Saturday show.  You can see comedian/actor Patton Oswalt in his Q&A panel in the IGN Theater from 12:30-1:30pm or the Ron Perlman (Hellboy/Sons of Anarchy) Q&A in the same theater at 3:30pm.  There's many more great panels and guest/exhibitors and your best bet is to plan your attack before heading to McCormick Place (in the West Building btw.)  Get there as early as possible since the parking lots fill up pretty quickly, and be prepared for a bag check by security everytime you enter the convention floor.  You can see a full layout and schedule on the C2E2 but I HIGHLY recommend downloading their mobile app which has proven to be extremely effective.  Enjoy the show.

Image Comics Hoax Hunters Options Screen Rights

Just in time for C2E2 too! Idol Threat favorites Hoax Hunters from Image comics has just been picked up by Hollywood!  Producer Jeff Krelitz and his Quality Transmedia banner have optioned the screen rights and is currently searching for screen writers to get the ball rolling on the project.  Krelitz is also an executive producer on Peter Panzerfaust; another Image Comic about Peter Pan set in World War II that is being developed by BBC Worldwide as a TV property.  Given the fact that Hoax Hunters is about a secret government group that poses as a reality tv show that debunks mysteries I figured this would be a shoe-in for a TV series, but a movie is even better! Congratulations to creators Steve Seeley and Michael Moreci, keep firing those warning shots at the mainstream fellas!

Talib Kweli & Z-Trip - Attack the Block [Free Mixtape]

Talib Kweli has been consistently solid ever since he released his manifesto.  Even over questionable beats the BK MC almost always delivers.  It's the reason why despite liking Mos Def more Talib has always been the half of Black Star whose releases I've looked forward to the most.  Coupled with his excellent taste and expertise in running his label Blacksmith, you have an entrepreneur with a very impressive track record. Z-Trip is a legendary DJ with over 20 years of experience and the digging skills to match.  You combine the two and you get a project that you don't want to miss, make that project FREE and you get a mixtape that you'd be have to be braindead NOT to download!  Attack the Block is a mixtape named after a British film about a group of hooligans defending South London from an alien attack. It features a huge list of extremely diverse guest stars  including Das Racist, Black Thought, Ab Soul, Killer Mike, Skyzoo, Mac Miller and even Lil Wayne and Mack Maine! It's being offered for free courtesy of the premier mixtape website Datpiff.  Enjoy.

Chi Cheng Bassist for Deftones Passes Away

Chi Cheng the bassist for alternative metal act Deftones passed away due to complications stemming from his car accident in Santa Clara, California, on November 4, 2008.  The accident left him in a coma until February 7, 2012 when it was reported that Cheng was in a partially conscious state.  He was released the following July to recover in his home.

Cheng died last night at 3am in the hospital. His family left the following note on the charity website made for him after his accident Oneloveforchi.com:

Our dearest Family,

This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emegency [sic] room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.

He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi and any other information may not be reliable. If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi’s son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go.

With great love and “Much Respect!” Mom J (and Chi)
