Stream AKIMBO's new track Equal Opportunity Asshole from "Live to Crush"

Holy shit this track is good!  It sounds good too, but you can thank Matt Bayles (formerly of Minus the Bear and producer for Mastodon, Isis, Murder City Devils, Blood Brothers, Caspian and The Sword!) for that since he recorded the album! Seattle's rockin hardcore band AKIMBO have released the single for their upcoming swan song "Live to Crush" and if their entire album is as good as this track then you can expect us to be even more pissed that they broke up!  At least we have Jon Weisnewski and Nat Damm's new band Sandrider.  You can pick up the vinyl for this at participating records stores on Record Store Day, April 20th and it'll come with a download for the album as well.

Kleenex Girl Wonder music video "NUBS" directed by Greg & Fake

Chicago-based indie rock band Kleenex Girl Wonder has released the video for their song "NUBS" and it just so happened to be created/directed/animated by Idol Threat favorite artists Greg & Fake!  See all your favorite characters from their mini comics and original paintings come to life interspersed with clips from various cult and sci-fi flicks! (although there isn't any cameos from The Get Money Poindexters! #justsayin.) The video turned out great, I can see them making a Fritz the Cat-esque movie, somebody get on that stat!  It's nice to know that we can still get our Greg & Fake fix even though they've relocated to Mexico.  Enjoy.

Hulu Streams Free Akira Kurosawa Movies for his Birthday

March 23, 1910 – September 6, 1998
In honor of what would have been Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s 103rd birthday, Hulu and the Criterion Collection are streaming 24 of his films for FREE this weekend only.  Criterion has been the leader in offering the premium home experience for movies to film buffs, and their releases are usually chock full of bonus features and top of the line picture quality.  The online on-demand streaming site Hulu usually only offers these movies with their paid subscription service (Hulu Plus) so this is a big deal and a great way to hook new customers.  For those unfamiliar with Kurosawa this is also a great introduction to his impressive body of work which spans 57 years.  His film The Hidden Fortress has been frequently referenced by George Lucas as a major influence on Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, his highly influential epic Seven Samurai has been remade as The Magnificent Seven and A Bug's Life, Yojimbo inspired Eastwood's "Man with No Name" Trilogy, and his drama Throne of Blood is based on Shakespeare's play Macbeth.  His movies are highly recommended by Idol Threat, especially for fans of samurai cinema (chambara) so take advantage of this from now until midnight on Sunday.

Author & Punisher to release new album "Women & Children"

AUTHOR & PUNISHER is finishing up mastering his upcoming album "Women & Children" which will be released on April 30 via Seventh Rule Recordings.  A&P mastermind Tristan Shone has stated that his "newest sonic endeavor combines elements of both machines and more traditional apparati to stretch and blur the dynamic palette from doom to industrial, to heavy bass music, and back again.”  Since he also vibrated my nuts off and destroyed last night at Ultra Lounge in Chicago I decided to post the video I took of him performing Terrorbird off of his last album 'Ursus Americanus.'  I've also posted the official video for said track.  You can see all that, the tracklist for 'Women & Children' and his remaining tour dates after the jump.

Minsk Ends 2 Year Hiatus

Peoria, IL psychedelic doom metal band Minsk are celebrating the 10 year anniversary of their very first show by ending their two-year hiatus.  The band includes in their ranks famed Chicago producer and member of Buried at Sea, Nachtmystium and Twilight; Sanford Parker.  Their last album "With Echoes in the Movement of Stone" was released in 2009 by Relapse Records.  Here's what Minsk had to say about finally ending their hiatus:

"Ten years ago today, we unleashed our musical interpretation of what it means to be alive upon a curious crowd at a rented American Legion hall in East Peoria, Illinois. And since then, this journey has contained immeasurable and indefinable experiences which have shaped all of us to the core. Ten years later, we are grateful to be continuing on the path. A little less than two years ago we made an announcement that Minsk would be going on an extended hiatus. The hiatus had to happen, and the hiatus had to end. And now we find ourselves again focused and moving forward, not a re-formation but a continuation.

Much has happened behind the scenes in the last year and a half. We have been busy writing, rehearsing, and preparing. We are elated to officially announce three exceptional additions to the Minsk family in Aaron Austin, Ryan Thomas, and Zachary Livingston.

Minsk will begin performing live again in early July with a handful of shows in the Midwest. Announcements on these shows will be forthcoming, with additional news of new releases, and the vinyl release of "With Echoes in the Movement of Stone."

We want to thank all of you for your support over the last decade. Your spirited words of encouragement have been quintessential in the empowerment of the Will. On this remarkable day, we celebrate what has been as our sights are fully set upon what shall be. Cheers!

RIP Pat Egan of Relapse Records

Pat Egan was the director of sales for the popular extreme metal label Relapse Records.  He was a staple of the underground metal scene and a pillar in the metal community in New York.  He passed away on Monday February 18 after suffering complications from pneumonia.  The roster of Relapse Records have banded together to help out the family of Pat Egan during this tragedy and have released a compilation benefit album affectionately titled "Patlapse."  The comp includes contributions from Brian Posehn, Dying Fetus, Brutal Truth, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Zombi, Toxic Holocaust, Dillinger Escape Plan and more.  Relapse's grindcore kings Pig Destroyer have also put up their own unreleased album to help benefit as well.  This 2-track sludge monster was basically Phantom Limb's version of the 1 track half an hour doom EP "Natasha," which itself was a limited CD released in conjunction with their 2004 album Terrifyer.  All proceeds go to helping Pat Egan's wife and daughter.  Here are excerpts of the official press release for the 2 albums;

About Mass & Volume:
"Pat Egan was a friend and a keystone member of the Relapse family for many of the years we have been involved with it. He devoted his life to supporting underground music and he immeasurably helped develop the bands he worked with. His untimely passing on February 18 2013 shocked the many people that his life and work had touched.   This EP is dedicated to the memory Of Pat Egan and to the loving family he left behind. RIP Pat."

**ALL PROCEEDS OF THIS RECORDING WILL BE DONATED TO THE COLLEGE FUND OF PAT EGAN's DAUGHTER KATIE**

About the Patlapse Tribute Comp:
"This compilation is a collection of just a small handful of some of the bands that Pat was most passionate about both personally and musically. Some of these songs are ‘classic’ Relapse songs, and some of them are brand new/unreleased songs that the bands wanted to give to help Pat’s family out.   Pat leaves behind a wife and a beautiful daughter who were both the lights of his life. All proceeds from the download of this compilation will go towards a college fund for his daughter Katie, a scholar and an athlete with a bright future ahead of her. All of the bands on this compilation have waived their royalties and Relapse is passing through all proceeds from the sale of the comp directly to Pat’s wife and daughter."

Get both and donate here: http://patlapse.bandcamp.com/

If you're inclined you can also send monetary donations directly to Pat's widow, Melinda.

Winters in Osaka - Monuments Collapsing [Free Download]

Chicago noise collective Winters in Osaka has been been a staple in the US Noise scene since the early 2000's and is arguably the best noise group in the Midwest.  They are mostly based in Illinois, but also in California (and I believe even Canada) and share members with groups such as Hate Basement, Bongripper, Harpoon, Koufar and more.  Their roster in the past has even included Chicago noise-synth legend Jason Soliday and Greg Ratajczak of Plaguebringer at one point.

Starting out as a harsh noise supergroup WIO has since evolved into more of a harsh drone or self-described "Creep Ambient" sound which is utterly unique to the group. They have had splits and collaborations with a bunch of legends including Astro (Hiroshi Hasegawa of C.C.C.C.) GX Jupitter-Larsen of The Haters, Mark Solotroff of Bloodyminded, and Tetuzi Akiyama among others.  This latest release pairs the group with Agoraphobic Nosebleed member J. Randall and is being put out for free on his bandcamp label (and Idol Threat favorite) Grindcore Karaoke.  This collaboration is basically a J. Randall remix that is meant to be able to put the listener into a drug-free induced trance or high as long as all the right conditions are met.  Here's what they had to say about the remix:

"This remix contains binaural tones and carrier noise embedded in the audio that produce a psycho-active auditory event. This recording MUST be listened to in its entirety with headphones for the listener to experience the intended effects. Please disable any noise reduction settings on your stereo audio player as it will result in a significant reduction of the carrier noise contained in the recording necessary for the embedded binaural tones to work. While listening to this recording it is recommended that the listener be in a prone or reclined position with eyes covered or closed. The intensity of the experience and duration of its effects can differ from person to person. There is no guarantee it will work as intended for all listeners. For best results download in lossless FLAC format or the available 24-bit AIFF sound file..."

You can download the mini-album for free at the link below, and you'll also find a link to Winters in Osaka's main bandcamp page which contains more free downloads and samples.  Winters is also trying to raise money for a 2013 UK tour in support of their new LP split with Amps for Christ.  They only have 15 days left so head on to their Indiegogo page (linked below) to be able to pick up limited cassettes and CDs or donate to the cause.

Scratch Bandits Crew - Break Ya Neck Remix [Video]

The world of deejaying has come a long way in terms of technology with the advent of Serato, Midi Controllers, drum machines and midi-everything.  All this "progress" has seemed to only hamper the artistry of it all with deejays lazily syncing their routines or button-mashing their way to a dope set, all leading to the point where some don't even feel the need to dj live at all or even know what their doing (see Paris Hilton.)  With all that backtracking it's good to see people taking the art form forward with the use of this technology. Turntablism is getting some new life injected to it with DMC starting to allow Serato into their competition and turntablists like the French crew Scratch Bandits incorporating the technology into their routines in creative ways.  Peep their live remix of Busta Rhyme's track Break Ya Neck, and big ups to Thatkidnamedcee for bringing this video to our attention.
