Author & Punisher Midwest Tour Feb/Mar 2013

It looks like Author & Punisher (aka Tristan Shone) will finally be coming to our neck of the woods, in my hood no less!  The one-man industrial drone machine will be leaving San Diego and coming to a midwest town near you next month and in March.  Tristan will be playing with A Life Once Lost and Encrust (formerly Hunters) at his Chicago date at Ultra Lounge in Logan Square.  This tour/show comes with our highest recommendation, if you're unfamiliar with the band check out our post of his music and videos below.  His latest album Ursus Americanus is out now on Seventh Rule Records:

Other Founding Black Flag Members to Tour as: Flag

In a surreal move that can be deemed both a blessing and a curse; founding Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris and bassist Charles Dukowski has announced that they too will be reuniting with Black Flag material and forming a new band simply titled "Flag."  They will be joined by Bill Stevenson and guitarist Stephen Egerton (who played along Bill Stevenson in the Descendents and ALL.)  Apparently this union was sparked by positive crowd reaction to a surprise Black Flag set by the foursome at Goldenvoice's 30th anniversary show in 2011.

You can catch this version of Black Flag in Europe at The Monster Bash and Groezrock Festivals, and at Punk Rock Bowling in Vegas over Memorial Day Weekend (May 24 - 27) where they'll join other Punk bands like The Damned (who are also playing Chaos), DRI, Lagwagon, Subhumans, The Bouncing Souls, Swingin Utters, Lower Class Brats and more. Tickets for Punk Rock Bowling go on sale Tuesday (1/29) at 1PM PST.  I guess two bands are better than one, and with Black Flag's revolving cast of members you'd be hard pressed to find a "definitive" lineup anyhow.  Maybe next week Henry Rollins and Robo will announce their tour as The Black Flag ExperienceA new album or extensive US tour has yet to be announced.  For now we have the upcoming tour dates:

4/26 - Monster Bash Festival - Munich, Germany
4/27 - Monster Bash Festival - Berlin, German
4/28 - Groezrock Festival - Meerhout, Belgium
5/24-5/27 - Punk Rock Bowling - Las Vegas, NV

Black Flag Reunion, New Album and 2013 Tour

This is some of the biggest news we've heard in awhile and definitely the biggest reunion surprise to date! Black Flag is one of the first and arguably the greatest hardcore band of all time.  Their legendary album "My War" was one of the earliest albums to bridge the gap between hardcore and metal music and help create what would later become the popular sub-genre sludge metal, so needless to say this is big news for both punks metal heads alike.  Let's not waste any more time, check out the official press release:

"Black Flag has reformed and is in the process of putting finishing touches on a new album with founder Greg Ginn on guitar, Ron Reyes on vocals, Gregory Moore on drums and Dale Nixon on bass.

The one constant member throughout the history of Black Flag, Ginn -- named one of Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time" -- defined the west coast punk sound and the DIY ethos of punk rock. Greg Ginn also currently plays with Good For You and Greg Ginn And The Royal We.

Ron Reyes of Decline Of The Western Civilization fame was the Black Flag vocalist from The Church / Jealous Again era. Reyes also currently plays guitar in Piggy.

Gregory Moore has played with Gone and Black Flag (2003) and brings his relentless and driving drum style to the band.

Notorious for not touring, Dale Nixon never-the-less played bass on the My War album and is the author of iconic Black Flag bass lines such as Jealous Again, Nervous Breakdown, Six Pack, TV Party, Revenge, Gimme Gimme Gimme etc... etc... While Dale has lent his skills to the new album, he is currently contractually obligated for a stint on Celebrity Rehab. Still, as he has always done in the past, he will continue to provide insight and spiritual guidance to the current bass player.

The seeds of this reformation were planted when Reyes invited Ginn to perform with him at his birthday party some two and half years ago. Needless to say -- the party was a blast and the two vowed at that time to work on some songs together. The fruition of those efforts will culminate in the release of the new album later this year.

Far from being a one-time grab, this reformation has Black Flag recording and touring extensively both in the US and abroad.

Black Flag are excited to announce that they will be headlining the Ruhrpott Rodeo in Hünxe, Germany on May 18th 2013.

Black Flag are excited to announce that they will be playing the UK's Hevy Fest on Sunday August 4th. Celebrating it's 5th year this summer, Hevy is a completely independent hardcore, punk and metal festival with over 80 bands across 4 stages. The iconic band will be returning to Britain for the first time in almost 30 years, making their only UK appearance of 2013 at the festival.

Black Flag is headlining the Muddy Roots Music Festival in Tennessee, Saturday August 31st, 2013. Muddy Roots is 100% independent and promotes artists ranging from bluegrass, old country to punk rock and everything in between. 3 days of camping WITH 60 bands.

More festival and tour dates to be announced soon including Black Flag US Tour Fall 2013."

Stay tuned to Idol Threat for updates.

The Mars Volta Breaks Up, Cedric Bixler Zavala Announces Departure via Twitter

"I just feel really guilty for not even really saying the truth because a hiatus is just an insult to the fans...What am I suppose to do be some progressive house wife that's cool with watching their partner go fuck other bands? We owe it 2 fans to tour"

Mars Volta lead singer Cedric Bixler Zavala announced today via his Twitter that they are breaking up.  This comes after the group's other main creative force, guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, formed a new band saying that the Mars Volta would now be on "hiatus."  It seems Cedric didn't want to waste any time clarifying the status of the band soon thereafter.  The Mars Volta was a tremendous jazz fusion/prog rock band that the duo formed after their seminal post-hardcore band At The Drive In broke up.  Volta has released 6 albums, 2 Live records and 1 EP.  The band won a Grammy Award in 2009 for Best Hard Rock Performance.  Their last album Noctourniquet was released in March of last year.  Here is the rest of Cedric Bixler Zavala's announcement from his Twitter account:

"Thank u 2 all VOLTA fans u deserved more especially after the way u rooted for us on this album. I tried my hardest to keep it going but Bosnian Rainbows [Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's new band] was what we all got instead. I can't sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta.  I honestly thank all of you for buying our records and coming to our shows. You guys were a blast to play in front of. We could never had done it with out you. My dream was to get us to the point were Jon Theodore and Ikey Owens came back but sadly it's over...For the record I tried my hardest to get a full scale North American tour going for Noctourniquet but Omar did not want to. I guess a break from mars volta means starting another band and ignoring all the support the fans gave us. I tried my hardest guys"

Decibel Magazine Presents Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death and Immolation 2013 US Tour

Last year premier metal magazine Decibel wowed the US with their first tour featuring Behemoth, Watain, the Devil’s Blood and In Solitude but they've outdone the FUCK out themselves for their sophomore followup!  This coming May Decibel will be bringing Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death and Immolation to a US town near you! This unholy trinity of Death Metal and Grind will be joined regionally by Cretin, Magrudergrind and Beyond Creation!  You would be hard pressed to find a metal tour that will be as brutal as this and I can't remember a time where we here at Idol Threat were more excited for a tour!

Napalm Death is just coming off tour for their album Utilitarian (which earned a spot in our Top 20 Albums of 2012) and Cannibal Corpse has just recently finished their own US tour in support of their amazing new album Torture, so we're lucky to get them both twice in one year let alone on the same bill!  The tour will span over 30 dates and is presented by Metal Blade, Indiemerchstore.com, Nuclear Blast, Lace Pickups, Century Media and Season of Mist.  Fucking CHUFFED for the 5/28 Chicago date at Bottom Lounge!  Stay tuned at the link below for when tickets will go on sale and check the rest of the dates/locations after the jump:

Update on Marvel Comic's ABC S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series

Since it was announced that fan-favorite Clark Gregg would be reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulson in the upcoming Marvel TV show S.H.I.E.L.D., people have wondered where the series takes place in the timeline of the films due to [SPOILER ALERT!] Agent Coulson meeting his untimely demise in The Avengers movie.  Nerd entertainment site IGN recently spoke with ABC President Paul Lee, who said that the series takes place after the events of The Avengers:

“There is no question that it is part of the Marvel Universe. In fact, the story takes place after the battle for New York."

In regards to the series being it's own show despite the connection to the Marvel movie franchises, Lee has mirrored director/writer Joss Whedon's assertion that it will follow it's own path:

“This is S.H.I.E.L.D. They’re following their own particular stories. There are characters in it, Coulson, who clearly come from Avengers. So it’s part of the world, but we’re going to be very, very careful that we don’t tread on the toes of the features and build a whole new world. And that’s what Joss Whedon does better than anybody else. He’s built a world for us.”

The more I hear about this the more excited I get, I can't wait to see if this gets picked up in the Fall - Joss Whedon hasn't steered us wrong yet!

Flying Lotus: Captain Murphy - Duality Mixtape/Video

In July a mysterious rapper named Captain Murphy popped up on a track with producer Flying Lotus and rapper Earl Sweatshirt of Cali collective Odd Future which was released by Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.  The MC has been making noise ever since on Twitter and the internets with his cartoon videos (and a brand new video starring Mr. Frodo himself Elijah Wood!) He became even more viral when his secret identity was revealed to be the aforementioned FlyLo at a live show in Los Angeles at The Airliner.

The amazing electronic/Hip Hop producer was now also a self-described cartoon villain akin to MF DOOM, complete with voice-altering effects a la Madlib's alter ego Quasimoto.  FlyLo has since released a Duality video montage/mixtape along with a deluxe audio version that also includes the instrumentals - all for free download via his Captain Murphy site.  The mixtape features production from Flying Lotus, Jeremiah Jae, SAMIYAM, Just Blaze, Madlib and more.  The first track is even named after Alejandro Jodorowsky's bizarre western cult classic "El Topo" and samples 300 Conejos from the soundtrack of said movie -that alone was enough to get me to download this, which you should do to at the links below (and make sure to check out the videos after the jump.)

Relapse Records signs True Widow

True Widow (who's last album made our Top 20 Albums of 2011 post) has just signed to underground metal label Relapse Records.  Here's the press release from the label's website:

"True Widow, the "reverb-drenched shoegaze" (Brooklyn Vegan) Dallas Trio, have signed with Relapse Records with an eye towards a late Spring release. The band is currently recording at the Echo Lab in Argyle, Tex, reuniting with As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar). "Returning to the Echo Lab just made sense," explained drummer Slim TX "It's where the previous albums have been recorded and it feels like home. The same goes for working with Matt. He allowed us to stay true to ourselves on our self-titled album and develop the sounds that would become our cornerstone for everything that has followed."

The band will take a brief break from recording as they head out on a handful of dates this month:

January 9 Baton Rouge, LA Spanish Moon
January 10 Atlanta, GA The Basement
January 11 Birmingham, AL The Bottletree

Idol Threat's Top 20 Album of 2012

The wait is over and Idol Threat's List of Top Albums for 2012 is finally here (and incredibly early as far as our personal track record goes!) It looks like this year's list seems to have more Hip Hop albums than last year's and we finally have some Jazz back on the list as well.  As always we tend to concentrate on the lesser known here at Idol Threat but for those that care here are a few mainstream albums that have caught our attention this year: Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel..., NaS - Life is Good, Frank Ocean - Channel Orange and Deftones - Koi No Yokan.  Now without further ado here is Idol Threat's Top Albums of 2012 (Click the jump to read the full list and feel free to share and repost!)

Andy Stott: Luxury Problems
Droning, heavy dub mix with hauntingly beautiful vocals over buried EDM beats in Andy Stott's latest release.  I would be reluctant to even consider this dance music at all as the tempo is slowed down to hypnotic levels for most of the tracks, plus this is much more heavy than any EDM I've personally heard.  In fact this album almost shares more in common with the purp-drenched production of Clams Casino or electronic doom act Wreck and Reference than it does most dance music. The bass becomes an atmosphere as opposed to a driving force, simultaneously keeping you afloat with its buoyancy and feeling as heavy as the weight of the deepest depths of the ocean. This is definitely meant to be listened to with a great sound system or some solid headphones, this shit will just laugh at laptop speakers or those tinny iPhone ear pods.  Luxury Problems is a headphone masterpiece, dub techno that is meant to be experienced as well as danced to.

Old Man Gloom: NO
Old Man Gloom is a supergroup containing members of Converge, ISIS, Cave In, Zozobra, Doomriders and Mamiffer and they bring the best parts of their respective projects together on 'NO' their fifth album and their first in 8 years.  While most of the sludge/doom albums of the past year have been using acoustic passages as interludes and respite from their denseness, Old Man Gloom adds ambient, avant-garde and noise sections for a more complementary dichotomy.  At times on this album they even remind me of Harvey Milk, if they decided to start experimenting with 'caveman electronics' that is.  While other doom contenders like newcomers Pallbearer and favorites Samothrace put up a great fight, 'NO' manages to stay on top with its more varied content and its longer running time.  If the breakup of ISIS contributed to the release of this then their absence may no longer be missed as long as Old Man Gloom manages to put out more albums of this caliber.

Vijay Iyer Trio: Accelerando
Pianist Vijay Iyer is doing more with his trio than most quintets or quartets can accomplish and it's earning him tons of critical acclaim, including winning an unprecedented 5 Awards in this years Down Beat International Critics Poll. Iyer’s original pieces are fantastic but his unique covers is where he really shines; whether it is the almost unrecognizable deconstruction of Human Nature, his mathematical version of Little Pocket Sized Demons or the aggressive approach to FlyLo’s "Mmmhmm" - whose addition itself is a testament to Iyer’s willingness to incorporate more contemporary influences. Together with bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore he creates some highly accessible Jazz without sacrificing the intelligence of his music. Vijay does all this by utilizing an approach that is actually approachable for a change, disassembling and reconstructing rhythm in a way that still maintains it’s groove.
