Slaughterhouse - On the House [FREE Mixtape]

I just realized that it's been awhile since we've actually posted some free music so I intend to to rectify that mistake over the next couple of days with a string of free music posts.  It's also been awhile since we announced the rumors that Slaughterhouse would be signing to Eminem's Shady Records, a little over 2 years to be exact.  Now the wait for the Shady/Aftermath follow-up to their self-titled debut is finally over, "Welcome to Our House" will be released this Tuesday August the 28th!  If that's too long to wait (which it is) Royce, Crooked I, Joe Budden & Joell Ortiz has hooked up with DJ Drama to release a free mixtape on his Gangsta Grillz series appropriately called "On the House."  If that's STILL not enough to tide you over until Tuesday (which it probably isn't) and you live in or near Chicago then local fashion boutique Jugrnaut has got you covered!  They've teamed up with Shady Records for an early listening party for the album that will be at their store on Saturday 8/25/12 from 6-8pm.  To top it off they will also be releasing an EXCLUSIVE Slaughterhouse shirt that will only be available as a prize.  To win the shirt (pictured below) you just have to Tweet, Instagram or Twitpic about the in-store Listening event coming this Saturday & let people know that the Slaugherhouse album “Welcome to our House” is in-stores on Tuesday, August 28th.  You will have to use the hashtag #SLAUGHTERNAUT in order for them to keep track of your posts. The most active and illest instagrams or tweets etc wins a Shirt!  Remember to include the hastag with every post and you must be present at the Listening party to win. You can get more details at the link below as well as download the free mixtape from Datpiff.com.  You can also click the jump to watch behind the scenes footage of Slaughterhouse recording their epic 15 minute track "Truth Or Truth" which is featured on the On the House mixtape.

Small businesses can have a tough time surviving in this struggling economy.  With unemployment rising budgets start to tighten and money tends to get saved for the necessities, which usually hits the art & entertainment stores the hardest. Even in a thriving economy Comic Book stores have always had a hard time making ends meet, it's even harder nowadays with the rise of digital media bringing down physical comic sales and the high costs of print cutting their profit margin as well.

Unfortunately Vigilante Press isn't immune to this trend so they're now offering 50% off of all the merchandise in their store - help save them by shopping and spreading the word. They are good people and always have great selections in stock so hurry before all the good stuff is gone! Even if this isn't your local store I urge you to go help them out, I'm sure your regular comic shop won't mind.  This is the perfect place to get all the Walking Dead books you're missing as well as tons of back issues, toys and shirts! Shop local and support small businesses!  Vigilante Press is conveniently located in Ukranian Village off the corner of Chicago & Damen, just East of Damen on Chicago.  While you're there you can also visit Permanent Records just down the street for your music fix afterwards, plus there's tons of bars in the area that serves great food!

Chicago Jazz Legend Von Freeman Passes at 88

October 3, 1923 - August 13, 2012
Earle Lavon Freeman Sr. was an often overlooked legend that unfortunately never really attained the recognition and fame that his talent deserved.  I've seen Von Freeman perform a couple of times but it's clear now that it wasn't enough.  This is why I push myself to see artists live as often as I do, never again will we hear the genius of this man's saxophone.

Von Freeman has played with icons such as Sun Ra, Andrew Hill, Dizzy Gillespe and Charlie Parker and has received the nation's highest jazz honor for the class of 2011-2012, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters award.  He is the father of jazz saxophonist Chico Freeman and brother to Jazz guitarist George Freeman and drummer Eldridge "Bruz" Freeman who himself passed in 2006.

Von has often been cited as being a huge influence on other talented sax players like Johnny Griffin, John Gilmore and Clifford Jordan.  Freeman also had a well known regular Tuesday night set and jam session at the New Apartment Lounge in Chicago's south side.  Besides being an amazing saxophonist Von Freeman was the consummate Chicagoan, often to the detriment of his career, as noted in a recent Chicago Tribune article about his life and death:

"His refusal to leave Chicago during most of his career, except for the briefest out-of-town engagements, cost him incalculable fame and fortune but also enabled him to create some of the most distinctive, innovative work ever played or recorded on a tenor saxophone."

RIP Vonski

Joe Kubert Comic Legend Dies at 85

September 18, 1926 – August 12, 2012
This is very sad news, it is especially sad news to receive after a 4-day long Comic Convention.   Joe Kubert was an amazing artist whose years on Tor, Tarzan, Hawkman and Sgt. Rock are definitive and his graphic novel Fax from Sarajevo is a classic of the genre.  He leaves behind his two artist sons Adam and Andy and The Kubert School (formerly the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art) in Dover, New Jersey.  We have lost a legend but his legacy will live on. RIP.

Wizard World Chicago 2012 T-Shirt Exhibitor Guide

Nerds do love their shirts, which is why companies like Stylin Online (booths 711, 910, 1817 & 2016) and Super Hero Stuff (732) remain  successful staples of the convention scene.  This may be fine and dandy for the comic book and pop culture fanatics but geekdom thrives on niche markets so it would make sense that shirt companies that cater to such markets would be coveted at a con (such as the previously mentioned Threadless at booth 2758.)  Which is lucky for us because this year's Wizard World is chock full of unique shirt vendors and even luckier for you because Idol Threat has decided to feature a few to help you save time while shopping so you can spend more of the con doing other things like buying prints, sketches and paintings from Artist Alley or getting to panels or photo-ops in time.

First we have Black Action Tees in booth 1936 which as the name suggests is a company that offers shirts with black culture-themed designs.  They have designs featuring black cult icons like Black Dynamite, The Last Dragon's Sho' Nuff, Black Lightning and Luke Cage aka Power Man.  They also have shirts with their own unique characters such as their "Black America" and "GI Jose" designs. Their shirts are seriously dope so be sure to swing by their booth.  Next up we have video game-centric t-shirt company Glitch Gaming Apparel (1602.)  Their shirts have clever gaming themed puns and play on words such as their awesomely shit-talking "You Noob" Youtube design and the Street Fighter "Hadoken fist in your face" Heineken inspired tee.  They also have other products besides their FPS and Fighting gamer shirts including a Left for Dead "Health Pack" and plush Portal "Cave Johnson Combustible Lemons."  Lastly we have Pinups for Pitbulls at booth 2483.  While not strictly a t-shirt company per se (their pinup calendar is their main product) the shirts that they do have are impressive enough to feature by themselves.  The fact that they raise pitbull awareness and help out rescue shelters is a huge plus as well.  They have a bunch of music-themed shirts which so far seem to be exclusive to the con so I would scoop them up while you can (it is for a good cause.) I particularly like their Minor Threat themed "Not a Threat" shirt.

There's plenty more shirt booths to be found with even more diverse designs but you'll just have to explore the con yourselves to find the rest.  Geek culture has never had their shortage of sub-cultures and the con is the best place to view them all in one spot.  If you can't make it to Wizard World this weekend you can find links to their websites below. Happy hunting.

Idol Threat Guide to Wizard World Chicago 2012

What originally started out some years back as a preview night has turned into a full-blown first day this year for the annual Chicago Wizard World.  There wasn't much there yet in terms of guests and attendees (I was only able to spot wrestler John Cena and actor Kevin Sorbo) but that will be sure to change tomorrow and definitely by Saturday when everyone is off work.  The convention is set up differently than it has been previously with the layout switching to a more "horizontal" configuration.  Where attendees entered in the past by the normal convention center entrance is now an "exit only" with the only entrance being in the side area where the early arrivers line up before open. This puts artist alley in the back along the restaurant wall, although artist alley is no longer clearly marked.  Most of the lines set aside for celebrity signings are in the middle of the floor with photo-ops being in the far right.  The print on the maps given out are a bit small so you may need to take some time to familiarize yourself with the floor layout before looking for specific booth numbers.

Box O' Zombies, whom we featured in our C2E2 coverage, are here with art duo Greg & Fake also returning (at booth 4421.) George Perez is at booths 4029/4031/4033, I saw him doing sketches first thing in the morning and saw him still going strong when I left around 7pm.  I wouldn't be surprised if he was at it most of the day with few breaks, the man is known for his sketching stamina and generous heart so stop on by his booth at some point to show some love.  Adam Bartlett head of metal label Gilead Media is also present with his partner John Pata.  The two are promoting and selling the independent horror flick "Dead Weight" that they both wrote and directed so be sure to check them out as well.  Chicago based t-shirt company Threadless also has a table at booth number 2758 and you can also see cult movie company Troma Entertainment home of The Toxic Avenger at booth 1816! There seems to be less artists and more vendors this year including a bunch that have been stuck behind in a hidden area so be sure to explore every inch that isn't closed off. I could not truly call this a guide without mentioning the fact that showering, deodorant and clean clothes are a MUST for everyone attending!  Venturing into the light for the first time this Summer may be rough for some geeks, but it's even rougher for the people stuck in closed quarters with them!  Be sure to set aside time for the photo-ops and panels as well, you can check out some of the selected highlights below:

Alex Pardee (EyeSuck Ink) Art Print Fundraiser for Aesop Rock - Skelethon Tour

This truly sucks, it's hard enough for artists and bands to make money without this shit happening all the time.  Make sure to check out http://zerofriends.com/ tomorrow for your chance to snatch this amazing print and help out Aesop Rock in the process.  Here's the press release from Alex Pardee and check the jump for Aesop's remaining tour dates:

"On July 15, hours before his 2nd show of the tour at the Fillmore in SF, someone broke into Aesop’s tour van and stole all vital stage gear, forcing Aesop to cancel the show. It took thousands of dollars to quickly replace all the audio/visual equipment they needed to be able to continue the tour to avoid cancellation.

In order to help recoup anything we can to compensate for the stolen and replaced equipment while they are on the road, we here at ZEROFRIENDS got together and I designed a limited edition ‘Skelethon’ giclee print to be released THIS FRIDAY AT NOON PACIFIC TIME.

The limited print is an edition of 125 and measures 16″ x 20″. It will be signed by BOTH AESOP AND MYSELF and sold exclusively via ZEROFRIENDS starting Friday Aug 3 at noon pacific time. Cost is $50 each.  All proceeds to Aesop to help him cover his costs. Thank you all for your support."

Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth joins Black Metal Group Twilight, signs to Century Media

Twilight (no not that) is a black metal supergroup led by Blake Judd of Nachtmystium. The band includes Stavros Giannopoulos of Atlas Moth, Jef Whitehead (Wrest/Leviathan,) Imperial, Chicago producer Sanford Parker and Aaron Turner of Isis.  At one point the band even included Xasthur among it's members.  They've had a star-studded cast to say the least but it's about to get even more star power. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth has just been announced as their newest member.  His recent divorce from wife/bandmate Kim Gordon has seem to given him time to explore things he couldn't while in Sonic Youth, such as his longtime love of black metal.  In an interview for the1stfive.com Blake Judd talks about how their connection with Thurston came about and their recent signing to Century Media:

"We knew Sonic Youth already through their soundman, Jeremy Lemos. He has a band called White/Light and that's how they know him. They toured together. He's also has worked with Rob Lowe from Lichens a lot, so that's how we know these guys. The Sonic Youth folks, whenever they were in town, would always be over at the studio, so I met them on a number of occasions recording over there and Thurston really likes our music and, uh, loves Black Metal. And now that Sonic Youth's broken up, and he's essentially divorced, he's got plenty of time."
