Happy 90th Birthday Stan Lee

Happy 90th birthday to comic icon Stanley Martin Lieber aka Stan Lee! Looks like the co-creator of most of Marvel's characters is having a very metal bday! (Too bad his bday present had to be Amazing Spider-Man #700. Ugh.)

Wreck and Reference - No Youth [Free Download]

Wreck and Reference are a duo from California that plays guitar-less doom. They label themselves as "electronic doom" on their Facebook page and they make their music using drums, synthesizers and samples. From the looks of their pictures they seem to employ a guitarist for their live shows but they do have a guy performing with some sort of sampler strapped onto him as well. The whole package has a very lo-fi aesthetic with the vocals sounding very ethereal and shoegazey as opposed to the classic doom sound or screamed/guttural vocals. The lo-fi tag, lack of guitars and the fact that they're a duo can lead one to believe them to have a bare bones sound but they actually sound quite rich and lush despite it all.  Their debut earned them the demo of the year title in my year end list for 2011 and had I posted enough free albums this year to do a Top 10 Free Albums list their newest release No Youth would definitely have a spot in it.  Wreck and Reference have refined the heavy ambience of their experimental electronic doom sound and have created an album that is unlike any other doomgaze album in recent memory.

Pacific Rim Trailer by Guillermo Del Toro

Legendary is KILLIN it with the monster movies! First Godzilla and now this? Guillermo Del Toro revealed footage for his movie at the 2012 Comic Con and now the rest of the public can enjoy his vision via the official trailer below.  Pacific Rim is essentially a Kaiju VS Transformers movie (they even call the monsters Kaiju) pitting 7 giant robots against 9 giant monsters!  With this, Godzilla and rumors of a live-action Voltron movie being optioned it's a good time to be a fan of robots and monsters! Pacific Rim will be released in 3-D and IMAX 3D on July 12, 2013

GODZILLA 2014 Movie Update from Producer Dan Lin

Legendary's Godzilla movie can't come soon enough but for now we're stuck with only minor details about the highly anticipated reboot.  Producer Dan Lin recently caught up with and gave an update on the filming of the movie:

producer Dan Lin
"We’re planning to film in March.  We are in deep pre-production.  Gareth [Edwards] has really mapped out his vision for the movie, you saw the teaser, but Gareth—thanks to [Legendary CEO] Thomas Tull’s help—he took over a whole stage on the Warner Brothers lot and not only showed the teaser you saw, he had some models built of Godzilla, he had art decorated all over the soundstage, he had pre-vis of some of the big action sequences in the movie.

So we’re in deep pre-production and Gareth’s vision of the movie is really exciting, it’s a true reboot of Godzilla.  And you saw from the Comic-Con footage it is a grounded, realistic version of Godzilla.  What would happen if Godzilla came into our world today?"

Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey previously revealed that production will probably last until June, and Lin went on to add that filming will likely take place in Vancouver.  Stay tuned to Idol Threat for more updates, and click on the jump to read Badass Digest's recap of the much hyped Godzilla footage reveal at the 2012 Comic Con.

ABC green lights Marvel Comics S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Pilot with Joss Whedon

It looks like the success of Marvel's Avengers movie has earned director Joss Whedon a TV spin-off.  S.H.I.E.L.D. (or the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate as the acronym is now currently known) has been a mainstay in the Marvel Comics universe since it was introduced along with super-spy character Nick Fury in the 60s and has recently branched out to the Avengers and various related Marvel Movies.  Now it seems the spy team will be infiltrating your boob tubes in the near future as well.

The series is said to be 'autonomous' in it's storylines, although it is likely that there will be at least some connection to the S.H.I.E.L.D. seen in the various Avengers movie franchises. Today it was announced that actress Chloe Bennet of tv series Nashville will join ER's Ming-Na who will play Agent Melinda May, Clark Gregg (reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulson,) Killing Lincoln's Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Elizabeth Henstridge as science whiz Agent Gemma Simmons and Ian De Caestecker as tech expert Agent Leo Fitz.

Joss is set to co-write the pilot alongside his brother Jed Whedon and Jed's wife Maurissa Tancharoen.  Joss Whedon has had success with the tv shows in the past, having created the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse, so I expect this upcoming ABC pilot to get picked up fairly easily and to be a huge hit.  This month he signed a three-year exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television. ABC is also developing another Marvel property based on The Hulk

Love Sex Machine - S/T [Free Download]

Love Sex Machine may sound like a (semi) innocent band but don't let the kooky name fool you.  The first track for example is called "Anal on Deceased Virgin" and it doesn't take long for it to convince you that these guys are serious.  Though it may seem like its a song for a goregrind or Death Metal band they actually are far from it (at least in terms of the heavy metal spectrum of music.) This French band plays hateful, heavy, punishing sludge in the vein of Eyehategod and Chicago's Indian.  In fact this is some of the best extreme doom I've heard in a while, AND it's free.  Sludge has been popular for a while and so in a world filled with dime a dozen down-tuned riffage Love Sex Machine stand out in the crowd by getting it 'right.'  They aren't exactly reinventing the wheel or even experimenting with the genre but who gives a fuck when you sound this good?

MTV’s Liquid Television to return in 2013 with Food One's D.I.S.C.O. DESTROYER

Last year there were rumors brewing that MTV would be bringing back Liquid Television, the popular animation showcase series from the 90s that was home to Æon Flux and Beavis & ButtheadMTVX, MTV’s new cross media group, announced the return in October 2011 and launched a digital hub at that will extend on-air to MTV’s channels, online at, as well as on Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook

There hasn't been much more details revealed until lately when famed street/comic book artist Jim Mahfood (aka Food One) announced his new series that will be featured on Liquid Television next year.  D.I.S.C.O. Destroyer is a collaborative effort between Jim Mahfood, Scott Mosier, and Joe Casey. All the art is based off of Mahfood’s designs and art direction. Idol Threat Top 20 Albums of 2011

Here once again is a late (but slightly less late than the last one) year-end list. I've had the list locked well before the end of 2011 but never got around to writing it up, and as I was prepping my 2012 list I figured I should probably post 2011's list first before moving on with this years list. As you know we tend to concentrate on the "lesser known" albums here on Idol Threat, but we do still enjoy the 'mainstream' releases as well. For those that care please check out Tom Waits - Bad As Me, Common- The Believer/The Dreamer, Björk – Biophilia and Bad Meets Evil- Hell the Sequel. Now on to the real list (click on the jump to expand):

Necro DeathMort - Music of Bleak Origin

When I first heard of Necro DeathMort I was skeptical at first. Who would have thought that combining doom metal with electronic and Hip Hop beats would blend so well? (besides Justin Broadrick that is.) Their debut album 'This Beat Is Necrotronic' showed promise but seemed a bit disjointed and jarring, their latest however fulfills said promise and creates a seamless blend of the dissimilar genres.

Skullflower- Fucked on a Pile of Corpses

This deserves to be in the top 10 for the name alone!  The legendary UK band Skullflower has had releases that have touched upon all extremes of drone, noise and psychedelia and they release one of their harshest yet with this latest album.  The name may be blunt but it does more than add shock value, it paints a picture of the experience to come - exquisite, primal pleasure surrounded by decay and death.

True Widow- As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth

Male and female vocals drenched in psychedelic reverb. Stoner rock riffs embedded in drone.  Like My Bloody Valentine but bloodier, The Black Angels but blacker, and lower than LowTrue Widow manage to take their various reference points and create something heavier than the rest and much different than the sum of its parts.

Ravi Shankar Passes Away at 92

Ravi Shankar passed away earlier today. Named "the godfather of world music" by George Harrison and a national treasure by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Ravi Shankar was a sitar virtuoso and a legendary composer. Idol Threat favorite John Coltrane was greatly influenced by Ravi but unfortunately never managed to collaborate with him on record before his own death.  His son Ravi Coltrane was named after Shankar.

Ravi was the father of singer Norah Jones and musician Shubhendra "Shubho" Shankar who himself passed away in 1992. A statement on the musician's website said he died in San Diego, near his Southern California home. On December 6, 2012 Shankar was admitted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, San Diego after complaining of breathing difficulties.  The musician's foundation issued a statement saying that he had suffered upper respiratory and heart problems and had undergone heart-valve replacement surgery last week.  RIP Ravi.

ShowYouSuck - One Man Pizza Party III: Rest in Pizza

Idol Threat fav ShowYouSuck is back with the third installment to his One Man Pizza Party mixtape series.  This time he's recruited fellow Idol Threat favs GregandFake for the album cover and it may be his best cover yet!  I haven't had a chance to listen to the mixtape but Show has described it in an interview with MTVHive as:

"...a lot of the same topics and same themes [as the first 2 mixtapes] but it sounds a lot bigger...It’s a lot darker, edgier and louder."

ShowYouSuck has recently returned from a tour with Shady Record's Yelawolf (off of the strength of his Chicago opening set no less) and with this latest release it seems that his success shows no signs of slowing.  With his everyman appeal and DIY ethics you can expect more big things to come from this Chicago rapper. OMPP3 has a whopping 26 tracks and features production from his longtime collaborater Mike Jaxx.  It also has guest verses from Brooklyn's Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire (on the surefire hit "Carne Asada") Grade A Plus, his hypeman Auggie The 9th and fellow Treated Crew member Hollywood Holt.

Failing Lights, Winters in Osaka, Eolomea, Che Arthur & MT Coast at Burlington Bar 12/10/12

Failing Lights (Mike Connelly of Wolf Eyes), midwest noise supergroup Winters in Osaka, Che Arthur, Eolomea (Andre Foisy of Locrian and David Reed of Evenomist) and Mt Coast will be playing on Monday, December 10th at the Burlington Chicago.  Winters in Osaka's unique blend of "creep ambient" has been evolving with every show making each live experience unique so it's always a good idea to catch as many of their shows as you can.  I haven't heard any of Mike Connelly's solo stuff but I like his work with Wolf Eyes, plus they were one of the loudest shows I've ever heard when I saw them at the Bottle years ago.  Che Arthur is the head of Past/Futures Records and has been with many bands but I find his solo experimental guitar work to be his most interesting.  This will be Eolomea's first show. Eolomea are currently working on an LP to be released in 2013 on Black Horizons.

Scott Kelly - The Sun is Dreaming in the Soul [Video]

Scott Kelly is not only one of the major driving forces in the legendary metal band Neurosis, he is also a successful solo artist in his own right.  His brand of dark folk can strike a chord with even the most reserved listener and his newest outing The Forgiven Ghost In Me is his best album yet.  Vice's music channel Noisey has been making some strides in releasing great music of late and they continue that trend with the video premier of Scott Kelly's track "The Sun is Dreaming in the Soul." Enjoy.

Author & Punisher - FREE Discography [Black Friday]

A few years ago I came across this amazing solo artis named Author & Punisher.  After discovering him I immediately bought his entire discography but forgot to post any reviews about it (his last album "Drone Machines" is in my top albums of 2011 list that I also forgot to post.) Tristan Shone (the man behind Author & Punisheruses his mechanical engineering background to create unique machine instruments that either make their own sounds or are used to trigger computer or synth samples.  His creations alone were impressive enough to warrant attention, but it was his blend of industrial, drone and doom metal that made his music truly unparalleled. Today as a special for Black Friday Tristan is offering his entire discography for free download on his bandcamp!  I CANNOT stress enough how essential his entire discography is and everyone should really take advantage of his generous offer (and maybe donate at least a few dollars or buy some merch.)

Each album is unique but my favorite is Drone Machines, and his newest album Ursus Americanus is now available as vinyl and a CD through Seventh Rule Records.  As amazing as his songs are you really have to see him perform them to truly appreciate the genius and ingenuity of this project, so I've posted a few videos after the jump that you can check out as well. Again the music (and videos) gets the HIGHEST recommendation that we can give.  Just put $0 when you "buy" each download (or put in a few bucks if you're so inclined.)

Government Alpha - The Oranda Nippon Conspiracy

I just realized that I have been SEVERLY lacking in freebies this past year so I will attempt to make up for it with a slew of fast and sloppy posts (mmmmm, fast and sloppy...)

Here we have yet ANOTHER free banger brought to you by the prolific bandcamp label Grindcore Karoake! This time instead of sludge or grind we get a noise album from veteran Government Alpha! GA is one of the vanguard of the 2nd wave of Japanoise and one of my favorite noise artists.  This free release is far from his harshest but this is still not for the faint of heart, newcomers to harsh noise (or noise in general) proceed with caution.  Despite this The Oranda Nippon Conspiracy is a great starting point for diving into the discography of Government Alpha or harsh noise in general. Play this LOUD!

Action Bronson & The Alchemist - Rare Chandeliers

ACTION BRONSON!  THE ALCHEMIST!! THAT COVER!!!  Queens, New York's favorite chef turned rapper that doesn't (does) sound like Ghostface has returned with yet another collaboration mixtape for the year! While the last endeavor Blue Chips paired him with producer Party Supplies, his latest pairs him with legendary West Coast producer The Alchemist.  You can expect more 90's NY style flows with lyrics about lavish lifestyles, smoking and gourmet ingredients with guest spots from Schoolboy Q, Roc Marciano, Duck Down's own Sean Price and more. Action brings a new school twist to the Hip Hop art of storytelling and he remains one of the most consistent (and prolific) MCs to come out in the last couple of years with FIVE albums/mixtapes and an EP already under his belt.  We highly recommend every one of his releases and "Rare Chandeliers" is no exception, AND it's free! Download it below and be on the lookout for Blue Chips Part 2 and some upcoming collaboration albums with Harry Fraud and Tommy Mas sometime in 2013.

Rectal Hygienics - Even The Flies Won't Touch You

I saw these guys play the other day and they just blew me away! Rectal Hygienics was formed by various members of the underground Chicago scene and they play a sludgy blend of disgusting noise punk that’s heavy on the filth and light on the frills. This is no-nonsense noise rock with emphasis on the noise. They don’t play riffs so much as bludgeon feedback into the lifeless husk of what would be guitar sound, and the power electronics-style vocals are delivered in a kind of confessional manner that humanizes yet belies its vile and offensive subject matter. “Even the Flies Won’t Touch You” is a violent dirge that slowly drags cacophony and dirt with it to an early grave.

From the label: “True spirited negativity that's all too real. Honest approach to pure shameless noise rock. Repetitive, pathological riffing underlying belligerent utters of self-loathing guilt. Heavy drugged out sludge. Featuring ex and current boys of Socially Retarded, Sea of Shit, Hate Basement, Machismo, Abuse Patterns, CSTVT and SHARPTOOTH.

Cattle Decapitation Drops off Six Feet Under Tour after Chris Barnes punches Singer

(picture via Metal Injection)
Travis Ryan, vocalist for death metal group Cattle Decapitation, has just announced on his personal Facebook page that his band is dropping off as support for the Six Feet Under "Autumn Apocalypse" tour. Apparently there was a disagreement and according to Travis, Chris Barnes (Six Feet Under vocalist & former founding member of legendary death metal band Cannibal Corpse) decided to sucker punch him. Luckily this wasn't during a Cannibal Corpse tour because instead of posting on Facebook, friends of Travis would be posting pics of him in the hospital. Because he'd be in traction. Because one punch from Corpsegrinder would put him there. Because: have you SEEN Corpsegrinder?! Here's the post from Travis:

"Chris Barnes is a fucking hack. I've personally passed on at least 5 six feet tours over the last 8 or so years because he pulls so much nonsense on the support bands because his ego is astronomical. We're leaving the Chris Barnes Show tour today. Go to the Chris Barnes show and buy some of their merch. They need it desperately...

...He couldn't handle the fact that we were destroying him nightly on merch and talked shit about us on stage last night. I went to confront him about that and he sucker punched me as I was talking. He immediately RAN out the door and fled to his bus like he does every night when the two fans that are left for their show are trying to get him to sign something."

Vice/Noisey: One Man Metal Documentary

Awhile back Vice's music channel Noisey announced a 3-part documentary that they would be releasing which focused on 3 different one-man black metal bands.  The third installment has just been released this month so we can finally share the whole thing with you.  I have only watched the first part but it has already piqued my interest.  It's a rare and entertaining view into the secret lives of these solo artists, one of which has never shown his face before this film.  Check the press release below then click on the jump to watch all 3 videos! (I wonder if Xasthur has always been bald and wore a wig or if he shaved his head before the interview?)

"Here's the first installment of One Man Metal, our latest documentary that takes a square look at a shadowy fringe of Black Metal that has never been documented... until now.

We interviewed three enigmatic solo artists—Leviathan, Striborg, and Xasthur—who produce black metal on the margins of society. These are men who don’t just play the music, but embody what it reflects: isolation, misanthropy, and anger.

The documentary includes the first on-camera interview with Scott Connor, AKA Xasthur, who crafts his bleak sounds from a crumbling apartment in the hinterlands of Los Angeles. We also explored the remote environs of rural Tasmania with Sin Nanna of Striborg, and finally traveled to San Francisco to speak with Jef Whitehead, AKA Leviathan."

Click the jump to watch all 3 videos.

Thanks to for the heads up!

R.I.P. David S. Ware

David S. Ware (November 7, 1949 – October 18, 2012)

It is with great sadness that I post the passing of another amazing artist - I have just heard the news that free jazz legend David S. Ware has passed the other night. Born in New Jersey but based in New York, Ware was a member of bands led by pianist Cecil Taylor and drummer Andrew Cyrille, and led his own Quartet for 16 years. He died at age 62 on Thursday in New Brunswick, NJ from complications related to a 2009 kidney transplant. David S. Ware was one of my favorite Jazz artists and I have unfortunately never seen him live, and it looks like I never will. David Lynch Foundation Television made a short documentary of Ware in 2011 which you can view at the link below. RIP David, be free:

Death Grips leak their album 'NO LOVE DEEP WEB'

Death Grips have released their new album 'NO LOVE DEEP WEB' as a free download today. I haven’t heard it yet but I wanted to post it asap before all the download links get taken down. Apparently their label Epic/Columbia pushed back the release of the album from October to “sometime next year” so Death Grips decided to leak it themselves in retaliation. Their official website has already been overwhelmed with traffic so they’ve been releasing alternative download links to compensate. Death Grips cancelled their tour over the summer in order to finish recording their new album despite already having released The Money Store this past April (read our review here) angering many fans in the process.

You can try to download the album from their Third Worlds site but be warned, the site contains a very NSFW cover of an erect penis with the album title written on it. You can also try the 3 alternative download links below. As I mentioned before I have not heard anything from their new album yet but based on their previous track record I can confidently say that this is a MUST download.

*UPDATE: It looks like someone shut down Death Grips' Third Worlds website.  They blame the label but Epic/Columbia is denying any involvement.  You can still stream/download via their Soundcloud page below or try the 3 alternate links.  We've also updated the post with our SFW version of the CD cover:

Childish Gambino - R O Y A L T Y

Ex-30 Rock writer and current co-star of NBC's Community Donald Glover turns 29 today.  To celebrate we're posting a download to ROYALTY - the latest mixtape released under his MC moniker Childish Gambino (a name he acquired using the infamous Wu-Tang name-generator.)  When Glover first started off as a rapper/producer his mixtapes showed promise but lacked focus, and the insecurity he now uses confidently as his sounding board seemed more like a crutch for his lack of experience.  Luckily by the time his first official album Camp came out Donald resolved his balance of self-deprication and ego in time to make a great album.  He went from being 'the guy from Community who sometimes raps' to someone who could actually have a viable music career outside of acting.  At the very least he is a far more interesting alternative to any actor-turned-rapper out now.

ROYALTY differs from his previous outings in that it features a plethora of guest stars including Schoolboy Q, Ghostface Killah, Bun B, the RZA, Danny Brown, Ab-Soul, Nipsey Hussle, Alley Boy, Kilo Kish, some forced rapping from Beck and motherfuckin Tina Fey.  Yup you read that last name right, unfortunately her cameo comes off a bit flat despite her best efforts.  It's a solid mixtape that is only slightly hindered by a few awkward & average guest verses and some overreaching song concepts.  Thankfully Glover's better lines outweigh the cornier ones and some of the other features actually turned out to be pretty good.  These tracks aren't merely just throwaways, this turned out to be a strong and enjoyable mixtape overall.  Happy birthday Childish G.

Noisebazooka - Woolgathering Urban Antipodeans

At this point I should really just start telling people to visit Grindcore Karaoke's Bandcamp weekly instead of merely posting a few of the amazing releases they put out.  I really can't imagine that Jay Randall is making any money putting these free releases out (especially considering he usually pays to keep the free download option going monthly) so the least we could do is show our appreciation by downloading everything they put up!  This time we're highlighting European grind-duo NOISEBAZOOKA who consists of vocalist Salmi & guitarist/drumcomputerist (© Idol ThreatAlmir. I'll let their Facebook bio speak for themselves and just say that this 99 track, 1 hour long album is a MUST download:

"NOISEBAZOOKA is a 2 piece grindcore-band from Vienna / Austria / Europe and was formed in late November 2005 out of the ashes of MONOLITH (1997-2005) to produce and perform extreme, fast, chaotic and aggressive grindcore-music in the vein of early NAPALM DEATH or BRUTAL TRUTH combined with the new sound and weirdness of AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED, DISCORDANCE AXIS or YACØPSÆ... NOISEBAZOOKA stands for a shredding and blistering guitar, non-pitchshifted vocals and screams, and insane fast drumcomputer-blasts. NOISEBAZOOKA constructs harsh, cold and ultra "destructured" atmospheres that turn your brain into pieces. NOISEBAZOOKA's live performances remind someone of hyperactive and insane breakdowns. NOISEBAZOOKA sets definitely free the essential energy of grindcore."

Hydra Head Records Closes Shop

Another one bites the dust.  The home for Gridlink, Harvey Milk, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Old Man Gloom, Jesu and more becomes another label casualty of the dying music industry.  Hydra Head Records was founded in 1993 by Aaron Turner (Isis, House of Low Culture, Twilight) and was based in Boston, Massachusetts and later relocated to Los Angeles, California.  The label also housed two imprints; Hydra Head Noise Industries & Tortuga Records, and for almost 2 decades they released tons of high quality albums from giants of the heavy and experimental music scenes. Below is an excerpt from their press release - you can read the full text at the link at the bottom of the post where there is also a link to buy stuff to help them get through their debts and final release responsibilities:

"The decision to pull the plug has not been an easy one, and in some ways is a not a choice at all. The simple fact of the matter is we've been running on empty for a while now and cannot afford to keep our doors open for much longer. Years of imbalance between creative ideals and financial realities, personal problems amongst the label operators, an unwillingness to compromise our aesthetic standards, a tendency towards releasing challenging (i.e. unmarketable) artists, and the steady decline of the music industry in general, are amongst the chief reasons for our inability to continue. It is a harsh but undeniable reality, and one which we are attempting to confront with as much integrity and grace as is afforded by the circumstances."

Death Grips - The Money Store [REVIEW]

Here's our first ever guest review written by Doug who runs the Pirate Programming Blog (see our blogroll links on the side):  "Preparing to go to the gym. Throw on the earbuds and press play on Death Grips new album, The Money Store. Immediately I am almost being commanded to punch out the barking dog outside. Clothesline the toddler running through the apartment hallway. Kick my landlady in the va-jay-jay. It may sound like something straight out of the David Berkowitz (aka the Zodiac Killer) playbook, but maybe in his schizo brain he saw into the future and heard this album. I mean this thing is sick!

In the mid 90's I was part of a Hip Hop group that was young and hungry. We basically jumped at any opportunity to perform regardless of how unfitting the venue seemed. Many of the shows we performed at were with DIY bands of punk/hardcore background. Let's say you took a kid from that scene that was exposed to Hip Hop and hardcore. Let's say he died in some tragic Rock & Roll overdose but was brought back to life like the cyborg Cain from Robocop 2. If you then fed that resulting robot the history of Drum & Bass and forced it to make beats, you may get something that sounds like this album. It is a splatterpunk onslaught of the senses. It is futuristic, it is unsettling and it is getting better with every listen. There are times when it sounds like pieces of Dieselboy's Soldier Story, DJ Scud, M.I.A or Techno Animal. But, honestly any comparison is a disservice because it really doesn’t resemble much out there. Laser didgeridoo sounds rub shoulders with flanged bass lines. Drum patterns skitter insect like. It just sounds so badass! I mean as soon as the synth line from Blackjack starts, it's instant grimey face for me.

So what's up with the vocals? Honestly I have listened to it about 4 times now, and I still really have no clue what MC Ride is saying (yelling). Ride sounds like RZA with roid rage. He is so pissed he is almost indecipherable. But I tried to picture the music without him and I think he really benefits the tracks. He may be saying the most profound shit for all I know but for me it's not about that. Ride adds viscera, blood and testosterone to the tracks just with his tone and rhythm. He is part of the music. That being said, Raid is really spittin' as well. Check out the lyrics on Death Grips Soundcloud page (at the bottom of this post) if you were like me and bought the MP3 album and not the CD. For the most part, MC Ride takes what many deem as negative about rap and injects those stereotypes with adrenalin. His lyrics are nightmarish and gruesome. He reminds me of the character on the first Black Sheep album. On that song, Dres mocked gangsta culture by taking his violent stories to a hyperbolic level. If you take that character and put him in a post apocalyptic future, you get MC Ride. But I still feel that it is parody. This may be the level of intensity necessary for our media saturated culture.

I will say my only qualm, and I don't even know if its a qualm, is that I had to crank the bass in my car because on the whole the album is very compressed and lacking real low end. But I really am not bitching. The lo-fi sound quality is definitely part of Death Grips' sound and that brings me to my final point. For all the people that will blast this album and say it isn't Hip Hop or that its too noisy; AT LEAST THEY HAVE A SOUND! I find that most Hip Hop acts nowadays are so homogeneous. Most mainstream "rap" is at the pinnacle of its formulaic trajectory (I said most not all, we can talk about that some other time). Even the Hip Hop purists are beginning to all sound the same (you must sound like Pete Rock, Jay Dilla, Diamond D - insert golden age producer name here.) Where is the originality in that? That is boring as fuck! I picked up De La Soul's 3 Feet High & Rising from the library when I was 10 and it changed my life. Not because it sounded like something I had heard before, but BECAUSE I HAD NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE IT. From that point on I was consumed by Hip Hop. Istill abide by that philosophy, I still crave finding new and different things and I still honor innovation. So does Death Grips. The Money Store is truly unique and it barely resembles what is considered 'Hip Hop.' It is something totally else. Completely essential listening." - HRRRSHW

Neurosis release visual trailer for Honor Found In Decay

Anticipation builds as Neurosis reveal the visual trailer for their upcoming album Honor Found in Decay.  Here's what the band had to say about the video:

"Created by video architect Kenneth Thomas, also responsible for producing the mini-documentary for NEUROSIS’ 2007-released Given To The Rising, the intense look into the new opus features intimate details of the album’s layout hand-crafted by the band’s visual specialist by Josh Graham, personal commentary from guitarists/vocalists Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till on the creation of Honor Found In Decay, as well as the first brief moments of audio to be publicly unleashed.

States Steve Von Till in the early moments of the preview, "A legacy can only be assured if we continually burn down the past and plant seeds in the ashes to grow new, greater things," and is followed by founding member Scott Kelly, who boldly affirms, "If you don't make a record that you think eclipses your previous record, then... you've failed."

NEUROSIS confirmed performances:

11/30-12/02/2012 - ATP’s Nightmare Before Christmas - Camber Sands Holiday Camp, England
12/02/2012 - HMV Forum - London, England w/ Godflesh

Chicago Jazz Legend Von Freeman Passes at 88

October 3, 1923 - August 13, 2012
Earle Lavon Freeman Sr. was an often overlooked legend that unfortunately never really attained the recognition and fame that his talent deserved.  I've seen Von Freeman perform a couple of times but it's clear now that it wasn't enough.  This is why I push myself to see artists live as often as I do, never again will we hear the genius of this man's saxophone.

Von Freeman has played with icons such as Sun Ra, Andrew Hill, Dizzy Gillespe and Charlie Parker and has received the nation's highest jazz honor for the class of 2011-2012, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters award.  He is the father of jazz saxophonist Chico Freeman and brother to Jazz guitarist George Freeman and drummer Eldridge "Bruz" Freeman who himself passed in 2006.

Von has often been cited as being a huge influence on other talented sax players like Johnny Griffin, John Gilmore and Clifford Jordan.  Freeman also had a well known regular Tuesday night set and jam session at the New Apartment Lounge in Chicago's south side.  Besides being an amazing saxophonist Von Freeman was the consummate Chicagoan, often to the detriment of his career, as noted in a recent Chicago Tribune article about his life and death:

"His refusal to leave Chicago during most of his career, except for the briefest out-of-town engagements, cost him incalculable fame and fortune but also enabled him to create some of the most distinctive, innovative work ever played or recorded on a tenor saxophone."

RIP Vonski
